Actually, what may have contributed to some losses on the Democrats'
side is the insistence from their establishment in refusing candidates
in any way left of the right like AOC or Sanders.

Remember how Hillary was picked over Sanders, in an election where what
may have guided sufficient votes was a desire to "break with the
establishment"?

Whatever candidate they pick is going to be attacked in the same way by
the far-right painting them as "socialist", "incompetent", "commie",
etc. So they may as well choose someone competent who represents a
departure from the current mess, there's no point in trying to appease
these cries, they'll exist no matter who the candidate is.
