Apple Care is a ripoff in the same sense that term life insurance is a ripoff. When people buy life insurance they are essentially making a bet that they are going to die within a specified time period. The overwhelming majority of life insurance buyers don't die within that period, so they essentially lose the bet. That doesn't make life insurance a bad purchase since it does buy peace of mind and not having to worry about the worst case situation of dying within the coverage period. That, by the way, is a big part of why insurance companies make money. Apple Care is conceptually no different. When people buy it they are making a bet that something major will happen to their phone during the coverage period. In most cases, it costs more to buy the coverage than the actual loss, but it does buy peace of mind for those who don't want the unexpected possible cost of buying a new phone.
