No, you've just masked the symptoms.

Not unless your job was to find a way to stop this particular instance of 
this particular program from crashing at this particular line of code using 
this particular set of input.  If your job was to find and fix the bug that 
caused the crash in the first place, you haven't done it.

Perhaps what you should do instead is, in a debugger, check the contents of 
fp (not the pointer, but the FILE struct that it points to) and compare them 
to fback.  Yes, some things are expected to change.  Others should not. 
However, you might find out what's corrupted, and lead you to the cause.
