I use an external drive for Time machine for that lot. Same on SWMBO's Mini. Then there's the server, a slow Mini which has a 3TB drive as main files device and two more external drives both used by TM. Stuff I'd really, REALLY hate to lose is also copied to DropBox and onto two sticks in case I have to rapidly exit the building. I don't really believe in Apple's (and it seems Win and Linux) assuming on your behalf that all photos, f'rinstance, should go in one folder in your user folder.
