There have always been dongles. Hell, laptops used to last a couple of hours, so you had to carry a power brick and a cord. You needed floppy disks. If you wanted to connect to an external monitor, you'd need something for that. You probably didn't have Ethernet, and in the early days of wifi you'd need a dongle for wifi. Of course, you'd need serial dongles for some software, maybe a phoinenet dongle, and of course all the other things you'd have to carry with your laptop (floppies and/or CDs, a serial to ADB adapter, SCSI cable and terminator, etc etc). The first laptop I bought (for my wife) weighed over 5 pounds, not counting the power cord and charger. By the time you got everything you needed into a bag, you were well over 10 pounds. Unlike most laptops at the time, you could get an internal modem (2400 baud) so that was one less thing you needed to carry. Oh, it also cost just about $5,000 in 2018 dollars. -- Don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. You choices are half chance; so are everybody else's.
