launch google maps and view the area of interest and that area will be
cached, but how much of it can vary and you don't have control over it
either (although scrolling/zooming might help). 

if your destination is close enough, it may not need to download
additional map data while en route, but there are no guarantees.

as i said, google maps was designed for an always-on connection. if you
don't have that, then google maps is not a good choice. other products
would be more suitable.
