I live in Epsom. I tried it just now on a new radio from Lidl that shows the frequency on its display. At 88.05MHz I get fair reception of BBC Radio2 although the published frequency from Crystal Palace is 88.80MHz. At 88.00MHz I hear no strong carrier, only the vestiges of Radio2 breaking through. So that means you cannot hear a birdie switching on and off every few seconds then? I am beginning to suspect the industrial estate as the source, its definitely stronger in that direction. VHF is difficult though, since it is often reflected by things. Brian -- This newsgroup posting comes to you directly from... As an alternative to building a directional aerial and putting the
receiver in a tin box, could you use detuning as a way of reducing its
sensitivity so you can go hunting?
Though I still think you ought to be able to find some local club or
similar: can anyone point Brian ("Chessington in Surrey or London
depending on your view") at a local amateur radio society? Surely there
must be something of the sort in that area.

Brian only lives about a 20 minute drive from me, but I no longer have
access to suitable test gear - no Spectrum Analyser. :-(

I remember doing "foxhunts" on a Sunday with the Southend and District
Amateur Radio Society (1980s) with nothing more than the odd HB9CV, or
loop - certainly no spectrum analysers!

I think it is harder these days, as I'd not want to lug my icom about its hardly portable. However a cheap fm portable with no aggressive automatic tuning is a possibility. Being at the extreme low end of the band might be an issue, we shall see. I guess its academic since nobody used the frequency except perhaps small pirate or legal restricted licence stations. I think the one which was on over the weekend was a pirate, and there are at least five of those around the fm band in this vicinity. It seems the authorities tend to only shut them down if they are interfering with services or involved in the supply of drugs or downright subversive like radical Islamic etc. Brian -- This newsgroup posting comes to you directly from... Never been involved with "foxhunts" but I presume they use low power signals with a limited antenna to keep the signal level low. This interference could be coming from a much higher power transmitter that could be connected to an antenna high up.

Yes, and only transmitting briefly. Really serious ones involved stations well hidden in a wood and/or by water, sometimes with extra unconnected lengths of wire to reradiate and confuse that way, and other such subterfuges; the SDARC ones were a light-hearted affair, suitable for family participation, usually ending at a pub in time for lunch. I don't know if they still are done (or even if amateur radio societies/clubs still exist). > >This interference could be coming from a much higher power transmitter >that could be connected to an antenna high up. > Yes, probably needing more use of nulls than otherwise. -- J. I might get arrested being blind and walking the street with an fm dipole and a radio, but if the weather is good over the bank holiday and its still there, it might be interesting so if you never hear from me again..... Well don't hear the pirate or the carrier about two miles down the road in Surbiton. Did some messing about with the portable but that makes it sound more like the actual pirate station is going on and off, as the afc is kicking in I think. "Certainly," says the barman, "that'll be ATP." (Quoted in) The Independent, 2013-7-13
