Yes, and only transmitting briefly. Really serious ones involved 
stations well hidden in a wood and/or by water, sometimes with extra 
unconnected lengths of wire to reradiate and confuse that way, and other 
such subterfuges; the SDARC ones were a light-hearted affair, suitable 
for family participation, usually ending at a pub in time for lunch.

I don't know if they still are done (or even if amateur radio 
societies/clubs still exist).
