#181693 — Mysterious icon change in the Dock

FromJohn Hill <watcombeman@yahoo.co.uk>
Date2025-08-23 08:57 +0000
SubjectMysterious icon change in the Dock
Message-ID<108bvqj$22j89$1@dont-email.me>
The Applications icon in my Dock has been overlaid by a white square
containing a red octagon bearing a white hand.

It looks like some kind of warning. But what does it signify?

What action do I need to take to clear it? I'd like it gone - it is unsightly,
apart from anything else.

Old John.

Is it showing the first app icon from your /Applicstions folder?

What you're describing looks like the AdBlock for Safari icon as shown
in the App Store. Have you recently installed it?

Further investigation ...

If it is that, there is a setting to toggle 'Show Dock Icon' on or off.

That is it. Yes, I recently installed AdBlock.

There is an AdBlock Icon app listed in the Extensions, along with the AdBock
Engine. I can get rid of the offending icon by binning the AdBock.app in the
Applications folder, But that stops it working.

"Show Dock Icon" adds an icon to the Dock, but does nothing to the overlay on
the applications icon in the dock. It is that that I want rid of. It is
obtrusive and unsightly.

The menu bar icon is greyed out, But the icon in the Safari toolbar is active.

Why do they have to make things so ******** complicated these days?

Old John (feeling very old ☹️).

It’s just showing the first app, alphabetically, in the folder, that’s all.
I think you can choose a different app to display as the ‘key’ app, or
reset it back to the Application folder ‘A’ symbol. Have you tried
right/control clicking on the dock icon for the options there?

He might also want to consider turning off:
System Settings -> Desktop & Dock -> Dock Settings ->
'Show suggested and recent apps in Dock'
Although of course the icon would go away when other apps are run.

That's not the answer. Remove the AdBlock app to the bin, the Applications
icon reverts to the standard "A" icon, it does not show the next in line.
I have now discovered that ABlock Plus behaves in exactly the same way;
perhaps it's a Safari thing?

I run AdBlock Plus in Arc without all this silliness.

Old John.

Have you tried dragging the folder out of the Dock and then back in again?

Is there a particular reason for not using LaunchPad, as that has been
the way to launch apps fro a long time now?

The matter is fixed now ;-).

I’ve never liked it myself, never had a problem looking down an
alphabetical list in a folder. But, YMMV always applies :-).

I never did during the last 20years. I have better use for the space in
the dock.

I do not like Teletubby style stuff. We better leave that to Microsoft
and its Windows.

I've never used Launchpad. I'm much happier with an alphabetical list. I know
where things are on there. And looking at Launchpad, it does seem to show a
lot of apps that are not in my Applictions folder, such as Swift Playground,
Karioke and Bike.
Even in the Aplications folder there is at least one app - Home - that I don't
us, probably never will and cannot bin. It's really in System/Applications
along with a lot of others; maybe that is why..

I am no longer fully in control of my own computer. I hate that. See the sig!

Old John.

You won't like the new Apps application in macOS Tahoe which replaces
Launchpad - it even includes apps on my iPhone! These apps can be run
via the iPhone Mirroring application it you really want to.

Old John,

*WHEN* did you first realise that Apple HQ is monitoring 'everything' on
every Apple device worldwide?

If Apple doesn't like what it sees, it can, and does, change things of
its own accord.

We, the users, simply have to trust that Apple will take care of it's
family - *US*!
=

I've always loved this:-

Classic computing: Computers do what you tell them to do,
not what you want them to do.
Modern computing: Computers do what they want to do,
no matter what you tell them to do.

I have asked AdBlock Support for help.

Fair enough - they ought to sort it out for you. Oddly the toggling
worked for me though.

Hello again, Very Old John! 🙂

As you know, I'm not as clever as many of the other's reading here, but
I'd like to make a suggestion.

Simply remove the Applications Icon from the Dock, then you'll not be
ably to see the ugly icon currently sitting atop of it!

A 'right click' on the Icon should provide you with options.

Good luck!

PS. Can you post an image of what your "Applications App" looks like?
I don't appear to have one in my macOS Ventura 13.7.8

The screenshot. It shows the Documents folder and the Downloads folder icons in
their usual guise, the obscenely altered Applications folder, a parked Arc
page and the Bin.

BTW I am running Sequoia 15.6.1 (24G90)

Alan, toggling the Show in Dock shows or removes a completely separate icon in
the Dock.. It cannot be removed by normal methods, only by the toggle.

Returning to the offending icon, if I rename the app as X AdBock. the overlay
disappears. I see only the normal Applications icon. I have no idea if it
would work if renames.

I use Safari only rarely; Arc is my default browser. It runs AdBlock Plus
(which I believe to be a completely different blocker) without all this
nonsense. Maybe that is the answer?

Old John.

I’ve found it now. You need to change the display option from Stack to
Folder.

Bingo! I have done so and the icon has gone.

Thank you.
