Yes, I understand *that*. I programmed on kit that could have been
used in Apollo. Maybe some that was obsolete by Apollo. Adapting my
wares to an iPad would not be simple. [That is dry, English
understatement at work.]

Oh, yes, that, too, I fully understand and sympathise with. Some of
my first attempts at programming would be embarrassing for a
five-year-old goat today.
I doubt whether anything I ever did back then would ever be useful
for anything.
It did the job at the time but I would hate to have to try bringing
it back from the dead.
Thank you for explaining.

One of the dependencies you may run into if you keep archives is that there is a hard limit of 2GB to those, Jan

It was to have been a complete rewrite. But anyway, the structure of the MacSoup databases is no mystery. Anyone can build on that, like MacCafé has done, Jan

Exciting!
If you do end up needing the wider breadth of everything that the Mac can
handle, you'll be coming back to Arm based Macs which'll run your entire iPad
workflow, too - very handy.

It's a phenomenal machine.

I've found iPads stay viable right up until they break - I've got an iPad3
still in service as the recipes and music streaming machine in the kitchen,
being stuck on ios9 doesn't matter.

How are you aiming to get data onto them, do you have an old Mac/PC in the
house to bring the pics down from CC? You can get little boxes that take an SD
card and automatically copy the contents into a folder on a hard drive, but
they seem to all be integrated devices rather than bring your own HDD.
Or does iPadOS and Files support external HDDs well enough to do it directly?

Yeah, it arrived today, and have spent most of the day settings it up. My old iMac’s Wireless Keyboard even works fine. CC is already sorted, I’ve been using the full cloud storage for a year, so my photos are already there. > Or does iPadOS and Files support external HDDs well enough to do it directly? Yes, you can get a USB-C to USB adapter, and a USB-C to SD card reader adapter, so uploading from my camera is no issue - besides, my Nikon D5300 has WiFi and can upload that way if needed ( I used that when I was holiday last year and took the base 9.7” iPad with me). >> Anyway, I'm sure I'll have some head scratching moments, but overall I >> can't see anything being a real show stopper, it'll mostly be just >> getting my head around a new way of doing things. > > https://www.macstories.net/stories/beyond-the-tablet/8/ for you! > > Cheers - Jaimie Well, yeah, I’ve had a bit of a ‘doh!’ Event there. I completely forgot about the iTunes/Music library. Movies is OK, I have a load that I ripped from DVD, they can probably just connect to the blue ray player here. It’s the Music files themselves that I’m struggling with. It’s all OK while I have Match enabled, but I’m not sure what will happen when I decide to sell the iMac and go mobile device only. Current Matched stuff will still be available, but you won't be able to rip
new stuff in AFAIK. Maybe have an occasional account on a friend's Mac or
Windows machine to do that? Or bite the bullet and move to streaming music for
new stuff.
Is there anything you can do with Amazon's "here's mp3's of the CD you bought
from us" I wonder?Does rather require buying CDs from Amazon though...

Well, yeah, although I’m also without a CD drive anyway now, although I wonder if it’d work plugged in via a USB adapter - the Logitech Marble Mouse works through it (which I really wasn’t expecting). > Is there anything you can do with Amazon's "here's mp3's of the CD you bought > from us" I wonder?Does rather require buying CDs from Amazon though... Well, I did have a look at more options. I guess it’s hope that Match still works, or I’m hoping that I can sync everything to the iPad (once I get an appropriate USB cable to plug it into the iMac (if that works). If that’s OK, then I should be fine. Otherwise, I notice that Amazon do a similar trick to Match for the same money (£21.99 a year) to upload your entire collection into their cloud, and match any existing tracks with those already in their store, and allow you to use those. It does mean MP3 rather than AAC, but to be honest, at my age I really can’t hear the difference now, not like I can when I play vinyl anyway :-). Or, there’s Google Music, which does allow the upload for free, but I’d question how long that might last. Perhaps a Plex solution might do it? But apart from that, I absolutely love the iPad already, and can easily see the iMac being retired. Cheers -- Andy H

I'm not sure if that counts as caching or not - you have to tap download for any track you want, ie manually - but it might be OK. You can also only do that if you've got a Plex Pass. -- Chris

Yeah, found that now, and so has Amazon Music Storage, although I can find reports of it being ceased, it still shows up as an option on my account, with the ability to buy it. There are no options I can see for uploading my music in any of the apps though. >> Perhaps a Plex solution might do it? >> > Good thought. Requires an always-on Plex somewhere, and I don't think the > client has any caching ability, but should work when you're within 3G or > better signal. Yeah, running out of ideas here. The intention was to go with just iPads and iPods here. I need to clear the desktop computer from the room, and having a permanently connected setup is not likely to be an option we can manage. The nearest I can come up with is to stick all my music into my iCloud Drive, and find some way to play them from there. VLC does actually work on the iMac and the iPad so far, but it's a bit messy. Otherwise, I might be down to turning off all the cloud and home sharing stuff, and simply syncing the collections to the devices manually. They didn't make this as easy as I'd hoped. It's just the music that's the sticky point at the moment, everything else seems to be well sorted. Cheers. -- Andy H

Which you can also bang iTunes on (if Windows) and use for backups, ripping
CDs etc.

We can arrange the room a little and get things to fit in as we need them, so for the sake of spending more money, or faffing about with stuff, perhaps this might present the most sensible option for now. Although I don’t want to spend more on this, I wasn’t in a rush to sell the iMac anyway, at least for a few weeks, so this way I think it’ll be felt the least. Now, I never found the home sharing thing worked too well a lot of the time, would it be sensible to leave the iMac idling on ‘never sleep’ mode with the screen blanked? It’s using an SSD anyway, and if I clear some cruft, I could even get the iTunes library onto it to save another external drive running. Cheers all. -- Andy H

Defers the problem nicely.

I think so. WOL has never worked for iTunes sharing in my experience.

And so spending several hundred more than the initial cost of the
iPad to correct design flaws in the iPad that Apple insist on
including but that they *could* fix.
IOS, like MacOS is Unix based. There is no reason why moving files
between boxes or reading optical disks should be difficult.
No reason save Apple management intransigence.
iPads, as sold, are broken.
