Because the average computer user, both individual and corporate, is a PROFOUND IDIOT that understands little about computing beyond pointing and clicking. GNU/Linux, however, in spite of having virtually no advertising, marketing, or public relations dollars behind it has attracted a significant following of users based on its competence as as OS alone.

If someone is using the computer as a paper weight, they have no need to understand anything about it. If someone is using the computer to run applicatons, they have no need to understand anything about it. If someone is using the computer as a software development platform, they do usually need to know a little something about it, but not very much in this day and age of high level languages. As that is where the major market for computers is, what else would you expect? Long gone are the days when everything was in assembly and you had to toggle in the boot loader on the front panel to load the secondary boot from paper tape. -- Jim Pennino

They do not want, nor need, to know how to install patches. MS and Apple provide that service. With the advent of the PC, human computer users had to learn about hard/software and do the work which system analysts, operators, field servants, computer administrators, network support groups, purchasing, and other work related to keeping a computer system functional. Requiring thses same people to know monitor, compiler, and app internals is too much. Anyone who denigrates system owners who don't know about machine language is a snob and, therefore, cannot be a good OS, compiler, or app developer because of an incapability of knowing what their customers need. /BAH
