i have some questions that i'm having trouble finding satisfyingly correct
answers to since if you google something these days, you'll find 800 pages
written by internet "experts" that are plenty sure that the 10,000 pages
saying otherwise are a nazi-liberal co-plot while they pretend to have
some sort of expertise. i think i've seen some of these goofs on the
usernets, come to think of it. ;)
in short; googling stuff is like asking fakey for his "expert" opinion,
anymore.
would running tubes at a voltage much lower than standard operating
temperature have any permanent negative effects?
what could potentially explain brand new tubes sounding great for a few
hours and then audible distortion is heard after 24 hours?

Observe the tube in operation in a dark room. If it has a faint reddish glow, then it's gone soft. Replace immediately with a new soviet-made tube, and you're fine for 24 more hours. I'm surprised His Nips hasn't told you this already.

ITYM *blue* glow which signifies that the tube is "gassy" AKA not a vacuum
anymore.
there's absolutely no glow at all since the tubes are being operated at
about 15% of their typical operating voltage. hence my question about low
power operation - both the cathodes AND the filaments are not at the
tube's SPECs.
it's a buffer circuit and not designed for gain, BTW.

So this is something you made from a recipe, not something already manufactured? I don't understand why you are using only 15% of the nominal plate voltage, it doesn't make sense. If you are getting distortion, it's probably from the peaks of the output signal being clipped. That will happen if the signal is going up against the positive or negative rails of the power supply. Or if you don't bias the tube in the middle of the linear part of the load line. At 15% plate voltage you probably don't even have a load line. Why it doesnt happen with a new tube, i don't know. If it's just a buffer, i don't see why you are even using tubes. An op amp is simpler and cleaner with essentially infinite input impedance. Hope you find someone who knows what they are talking about.
