#562487 — do we have any electronic experts here with experience with tubes(valves)?

From"\"Fakey's\" dogwhistle holder living at 5907 Stanton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA (aka Teh Mop Jockey), socked up as 5907 Stanton Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206-2117" <root@127.0.0.1>

Subjectdo we have any electronic experts here with experience with tubes(valves)?
Message-ID<op.yecgn9hntm21m2@benson.localhost>
i have some questions that i'm having trouble finding satisfyingly correct
answers to since if you google something these days, you'll find 800 pages
written by internet "experts" that are plenty sure that the 10,000 pages
saying otherwise are a nazi-liberal co-plot while they pretend to have
some sort of expertise. i think i've seen some of these goofs on the
usernets, come to think of it. ;)

in short; googling stuff is like asking fakey for his "expert" opinion,
anymore.

would running tubes at a voltage much lower than standard operating
temperature have any permanent negative effects?

what could potentially explain brand new tubes sounding great for a few
hours and then audible distortion is heard after 24 hours?

"Oh, yeah... it's 2550.25 volts... so why does your graph not even
reach 2500 volts, given that eventually all the sinewaves will
constructively interfere (ie: *add* to each other) to *sum* to 2550.25
volts?"

Fakey, it doesn't reach 2500 volts because the summation of your sinewaves
never reaches that. They never reach their max values at the same time.
That's how stupid you are.

"I most certainly *did* prove otherwise. It can't even arrive at the
correct sinewave summation voltage of 2550.25 volts"

Fakey, you only *proved* that you are too inept to graph the equations and
notice a few things about the interactions of their frequencies when
summed.

the next line of code is never executed, but snickers DEFINITELY can't
figure out why it isn't and instead has a bunch of lame excuses while
still having not produced a value for t where the sum=2550.25, as he has
k0okily proklamed in many usenet messages.

yammer about "morphing" and maybe try to lodge some frivolous complaints

The Gish Gallop is often used as an indirect argument from authority — as
it appears to paint the galloper as an expert in a broad range of subjects
or with an extensive knowledge of an individual one. Simultaneously it
presents opponents (in spoken debates) or refuters (in written,
Internet-based ones) as incompetent bumblers who didn't do their homework
before the debate. Such emphasis on style over substance is the reason
many scientists disdain public debates as a forum for disseminating
opinions. - Page #1 from the Gospel of SnickerTurd

snickers the wonderturd describes how he alerted lots of his kiddie pr0n
friends to the ensuing FBI sting in message
<b5e7da79a455d0c9227b1b50e25e7ea1@dizum.com>:
"That's easy enough to do... how do you think my crew uncovered the
largest CP ring using Tor and I2P, which we promptly turned over to
the FBI? I discovered a way to uncover the IP addresses the I2P users were
using, and a way of tracking Eepsites back to their IP addresses, then we
figured out that we could DDOS a Tor IP address and modify Tor headers
while checking whether a Tor hidden service was still up, then using
process of elimination to pinpoint the IP address hosting that hidden
service. It's not rocket science.

_The I2P community got all up in arms when I discussed on their forum how
I was doing it, and that it'd be a good way of cleaning up I2P so it can
get on with being a platform to research anonymous communication... my
distinct impression was that the "anonymity
research platform" story was just a cover story to allow pervs to
trade CP._ (NOTE: admits to participating in what he "suspected" was a
kiddie pr0n network.)

That Silk Road 2.0 was taken offline in the ensuing FBI Operation
Onymous was just icing on the cake."

Fakey, it doesn't reach 2500 volts because the summation of your sinewaves

The Gish Gallop is often used as an indirect argument from authority — as
it appears to paint the galloper as an expert in a broad range of subjects
or with an extensive knowledge of an individual one. Simultaneously it
presents opponents (in spoken debates) or refuters (in written,
Internet-based ones) as incompetent bumblers who didn't do their homework
before the debate. Such emphasis on style over substance is the reason
many scientists disdain public debates as a forum for disseminating

"That's easy enough to do... how do you think my crew uncovered the

_The I2P community got all up in arms when I discussed on their forum how

what with fakey here and all, plus SCI.PHYSICS... aren't electronics part
of the study of physics? i sure remember drawing a lot of phasor diagrams

at 80% full voltage should be ok.

the biasing on the tube may stray out too far if HV is too low, then
distortion, low gain.

Filiments, could go 70%, you can run DC instead of AC as long as total
power is the same. (depends on which tube type, there are some old tubes
that take a few amps for heater)

bias changed, perhaps a resistor cooked a little more, or a C went more
flaky.

I'm assuming you have an old set, with orgional R + C's

Gassy tube....

what type of radio, what type of tube ?

cant post to kooks, on banded list

No. The tubes prolly won't work if the plate / whatever
voltage is too low, but tubes are nearly indestructible.
Unless you drop them.

> what could potentially explain brand new tubes sounding great for a few

I don't remember very much about tubes, except why nobody
wants to use them anymore. Maybe somebody sold you a bunch
of soviet-made tubes that have been sitting in a dank
warehouse for 30 years.

The main thing that goes wrong with tubes is that air leaks
into them, causing them to go "soft" in their old age.
Possibly the heat of operation is damaging the glass seal
and letting air in.

Observe the tube in operation in a dark room. If it has a
faint reddish glow, then it's gone soft. Replace
immediately with a new soviet-made tube, and you're fine for
24 more hours.

I'm surprised His Nips hasn't told you this already.

the cheap chinese 6J1 ones made yesterday by some child had the same
results but worse.

ITYM *blue* glow which signifies that the tube is "gassy" AKA not a vacuum
anymore.

there's absolutely no glow at all since the tubes are being operated at
about 15% of their typical operating voltage. hence my question about low
power operation - both the cathodes AND the filaments are not at the
tube's SPECs.

it's a buffer circuit and not designed for gain, BTW.

no, i think i'll see if anybody actually knows what they are talking about
in regard to tubes/valves/circuits/gables first.

while checking whether a Tor hidden service was still up, then using
process of elimination to pinpoint the IP address hosting that hidden
service. It's not rocket science.

_The I2P community got all up in arms when I discussed on their forum how
I was doing it, and that it'd be a good way of cleaning up I2P so it can
get on with being a platform to research anonymous communication... my
distinct impression was that the "anonymity

trade CP._ (NOTE: admits to participating in what he "suspected" was a

That Silk Road 2.0 was taken offline in the ensuing FBI Operation

Tubes are big, and they require high-voltage plate power
supplies, which are heavy, bulky & expensive. And filament
supplies, grid bias supplies, screen supplies etc, ditto.
They produce a lot of heat, so they are really inefficient.
Not very rugged, which is why cars didn't usually have
radios until transistors were invented. Since they are hot,
there are noise issues in some apps (probably not in audio).

There are a few special-purpose apps for tubes -- eg high
power (as in broadcast), and/or high frequency Traveling
Wave Tube microwave/mm wave amplifiers. Also magnetrons,
which are both oscillator/high power microwave source
(microwave oven) and klystron tubes. Special purpose tubes
are making a bit of a comeback.

It's surprising they can even function at 15% of nominal
voltage. If that's how the equipment was designed to
operate, ok. Otherwise, that could be your problem.

i'm using them for audio specifically.

i bought a bunch.

plus, there are at least 5 guitar amplifiers in my studio that require
tubes.

i guess they're pretty much worthless for a reason.

yep blue.

don't have a "tube tester" on hand, but i do have a variac, a digital
multimeter, a variable power supply, and a o-scope.

just thought i'd ask... i got the feeling for some reason that there were
people here who had vast knowledge of electronics.

it's how the tube buffer circuit was designed, AFAICT.

that was for the blokes "across the pond" driving their "lorries" and
watching "are you being served" and whatnot.

> Good luck.

luckily i don't need that. i need information. i suppose i will have to
commence with a thorough analysis of the circuit i bought and the tubes
themselves. i figured that someone had one apart at some point and
knocked out the buggers.

honestly, i was seeing if anybody could put a finger on the gradual
distortion buildup.

fuck and then i ask a question and he's nowhere to be found. prob'ly with
the kids again matching the tubes in his lotus, FFS.

So this is something you made from a recipe, not something
already manufactured?

I don't understand why you are using only 15% of the nominal
plate voltage, it doesn't make sense. If you are getting
distortion, it's probably from the peaks of the output
signal being clipped. That will happen if the signal is
going up against the positive or negative rails of the power
supply. Or if you don't bias the tube in the middle of the
linear part of the load line. At 15% plate voltage you
probably don't even have a load line.

Why it doesnt happen with a new tube, i don't know.

If it's just a buffer, i don't see why you are even using
tubes. An op amp is simpler and cleaner with essentially
infinite input impedance.

Hope you find someone who knows what they are talking about.

that's what i'm trying to figure out.

it's possible that the power to the filament is AC when ideally, it should
be DC.

i haven't had a lot of time to poke around yet.

op amps don't add in a "tube sound" (2nd order harmonics).

snickerTurds can't seem to refute the following:

HOW TO RUN: download arbitrary precision libraries from:

http://www.hvks.com/Numerical/arbitrary_precision.html

place those files in a directory and save this file as
snickerSinewaveStew.cpp inside that same directory.

compiles with:

gcc -Wall -I. precisioncore.cpp snickerSinewaveStew.cpp -lstdc++

run with:

./a.out

enjoy the LULZ ;)

"Oh, yeah... it's 2550.25 volts... so why does your graph not even
reach 2500 volts, given that eventually all the sinewaves will
constructively interfere (ie: *add* to each other) to *sum* to 2550.25
volts?"

Fakey, it doesn't reach 2500 volts because the summation of your sinewaves
never reaches that. They never reach their max values at the same time.
That's how stupid you are.

"I most certainly *did* prove otherwise. It can't even arrive at the
correct sinewave summation voltage of 2550.25 volts"

Fakey, you only *proved* that you are too inept to graph the equations and
notice a few things about the interactions of their frequencies when
summed.

the next line of code is never executed, but snickers DEFINITELY can't
figure out why it isn't and instead has a bunch of lame excuses while
still having not produced a value for t where the sum=2550.25, as he has
k0okily proklamed in many usenet messages that are archived FOREVER.

*/
   cout << "snickerTurds was right! the sum is " << sum << " at time t=" <<
t <<endl;
}

If my poasts are offensive to you, you can always block all From: headers
containing "root@127.0.0.1", unless you are an idiot who would like to
yammer about "morphing" and maybe try to lodge some frivolous complaints
to my news provider, then please be sure to ignore this helpful
information and have fun making an ass of yourself in public. :)

if that route of silencing those horrid opinions of mine that you

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Gish_Gallop
