#588674 — Candy issue requires physics :-)

I bought a couple of pounds of large good quality
candy last year in an airtight glass container. Then a
bit later I needed the glass container for something
else so placed the candies inside another non-airtight
container. A couple of weeks later I realized they had
begun to absorb moisture from air and had started to
become sticky (almost). So to keep them separate I
wrapped them individually with aluminum foil. Then
last week at last I got a chance to go to them and
have a few with hot tea, etc. I found that the
aluminum foil are badly stuck with the candies and I
have to remove them piece by piece in tiny sizes,
requiring 100 to 15 minutes of work for each. Do you
know how I could expedite the removal of the foils?

freeze one,
then brake it apart with something to see if it flakes off the foil.

Ok. Smashing it didn't help cause only the powdery
part comes off. The rest mostly are still stuck with
aluminum. But breaking it into four parts helped
reduce removal to about three minutes for each candy.
Still rather messy. Amazing how fast it absorbs
moisture.

hmm..

how about hard freezing, then put warm water on alu foil, idea is the
foil expansion from cold to warm would help seaperate it from still cold
candy ?

You mean smash it into pieces? What's good about candy
if its smashed into pieces? I froze them and still the
aluminum wouldn't come apart. I'll break one to see if
that helps just for the heck of it.

They must be really good if you spend over 1.5 hours for each piece.

I have never had this exact problem. Perhaps you will need to
experiment. Vacuum freeze drying might work.

Any chemicals I know of that can dissolve aluminum will have an adverse
effect on the flavour.

The only other thing I can think of would be to load up a sandblaster
with sugar.

It meant to be 10 not 100 minutes

I don't know how to do that. I tried desiccants and it
didn't help. Water has become part of a very thin
layer of candy surface turning it into glue, and it
doesn't let the water out no matter what.

I don't have a sandblaster and turning aluminum into a
powdery thing mixed with air is probably not healthy.

This sounds promising. If it works then at least I'll
have the candy minus its original surface, scattered
separately on a plate in a form that I could still
call them candy, left to enjoy. I'll tell you if it
worked or not.

I've tried that (and knife, blade, etc). Very messy
and the pressure crushes the surface layer turning it
into a white opaque substance with aluminum mixed in
without being seen! Doesn't work.

I love your 1-liner-commands. Military short-speak; especially
when you referred to communist and free loader "Double-A"
<double-a3@hush.com> as "Double-Asshole", ... who also
posts as "Abner Afterduft", the "Alcoholic Addict" & doubles
as the criminal "Anon Yidd Mouse" <nobody@home.invalid>.
Thanks for the laughs, dude.
