There was the advertisement of "solutions manuals" which for a short time was front page hogging. We appall censorship, and we expect for ourselves to have freedom of speech and ignore and do not read posts that upset us. But, Ross, you can accept the idea that front page hoggers are censors. That their behaviour is that of censorship. They intend to knock other posters off the front page so that having your post buried in 15 minutes after sending, is a form of censorship. Front page hogs like Wormley and AS and JMcginn censor away the posts of others by knocking those posts to a page that most onlookers and newcomers seldom look. Front page hogging is censorship because their aim is not science discussion but rather domination of front page. So, Google needs a means of throttling or thwarting those that desire to dominate the front page rather than want to do genuine science discussion. Sci.math used to have a front page hogs of WM and JG but now they are under some control by "flagged for abuse" and other persuasions. Here in sci.physics, is still a primitive third world country forum of bad behavior of front page hogging. We do not need a Wormley cut paste of science news, we can do that ourselves. And we do not want a McGinn constant repeat of his nonsense beliefs which 1 or 2 posts a day is enough of that nonsense, not 25 posts each and every day hogging the front page. Sad to say that the PV with his mistaken view of special relativity, is a better behaved poster than is McGinn, Wormley, AS who are a direct threat to all posters by bumping and knocking you off the front page-- call it Wormley censorship of sci.physics. If Wormley does not like a posters recent thread, then out comes 25 new cut and paste crap from Wormley to bump your post over into a far away page. So, front page hogging is a form of censorship. And the way I deal with it is to report these abusers to Google, and even if Google does nothing, at least I see the forum with mostly "blocked from view since you reported this as abuse with 29 other threads". It takes but a few seconds to report a thread for abuse, and if a lot of other people do the same, then the hogs will be looked at by Google to either stop or change behaviour, or Google could engineer software that does not allow a poster to have more than 2 threads in the first 50 threads on the newsboard. I would like Google to engineer software that prevents front page hogging because in the future, such software is wanted and needed. AP

The benefits of a free forum include the moral superiority (for freedom-loving types) of letting those with whom you disagree have a view. That's because your views or means or your mores are somehow so superior that they will win out in the manners of consensus even when hogs and hog dogs spew their trough. When I hear people take the fascist view I hate them and find them inferior and they disgust me. (And they're sick and rotten.) Because, as a conscientious mathematician, I don't care if I'm right or wrong, there is right or wrong. So, the easiest way to douse the souse is ignore them. Because, I refuse those who would cut others their views and those who find it easiest to use idiots to drive acceptance of their (lack of) views. I refuse and reject and resent and resist that kind of degradation. It's not so much that I'm any traditionally or epochally disenfranchised class, on the contrary, I come from long lines of dead white males, but really it's a matter of the moral and ethical superiority of the conscientious scientist that hogs and dogs get their say (if not their day). If you really want to make the front page, then point out some real contribution to the way of the conscientious scientist, where as well some have the zeal of the individual libertarian and as against the hegemony of like-minded fools. For example, the other day we were talking about some fellow who had derived Lienard Wiechert or along those lines, in a brave new way. That's the kind of guy who deserves accolades, prizes, and fetes. That's a hard work-a-day engineer who remarked on a novel derivation _that is fundamental, proper, and more correct than the course of the day_. So, carry on, but, treat hog dogs with the contempt (and lack thereof) they don't deserve. Just because they abuse publishing from their anonymity or pipe-hole, don't join them. And, refuse the dirty work of others. It's upon you to revive your spirit of purpose of your work(s). The spirit belongs to it, not us. Get some.

Hold on there, pal. A criminal, by definition, is someone who breaks a law that is on the books. Someone who does something you find irritating but who has not broken any law is not a criminal. You need to learn how to deal better with irritations rather than demonizing them. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

What a stupid remark.
I don't even feel like explaining this to you :)

What you call "front page hogging" is merely a function of using Google Groups and how they order posts and their lack of a killfile. If you don't like how Google Groups displays Usenet, why not use something better? There are plenty of newsreaders out there. You were a user of Usenet long before Google even existed, so you must know this. I have no "front page" issue. New posts show up at the end for me. I have McGinn killfiled so as far as I am concerned, he simply doesn't exist. >So, Google needs a means of throttling or thwarting those that desire to >dominate the front page rather than want to do genuine science discussion. It is up to Google how they display Usenet. If the past is any prediction, don't expect them to ever improve how they display Usenet. And again, they do not control Usenet. I ask again, if you don't like how Google displays Usenet, why do you still use Google? Especially since I know you know of non-Google Usenet software.

Fuck Google Groups, and the cranks that post from it. And Wormley is posting good information, unlike certain cranks I can mention.
