Hydrogen fuel has 20x less energy density than gasoline.
It requires a fuel tank 20x bigger to go the same distance.

And 20x many lorries to carry the fuel to the gas station.

There is nowhere written
the hydrogen gas to be used the way you have supposed.

More and more electricity will be produced
via cheap solar panels with peak production.

Therefore there is need to develop energy storage that

- can absorb large amount of energy
- is cheap and simple
- can be used for long term storage

One of ways is hydrogen and derived products like methane.
Methane is already used to power cars as CNG / LNG.

Well I went to a lecture by the original US guy pushing this tech
and his visions are not electric.

His ideas were about safety and how it is all improved
over the ages to transport the stuff safely.

If hydrogen is being used as a battery, that doesn't bode
well either. The current ideas all go around improving cheaper
flow batteries. Hydrogen has no viable future
because its infinitely more dangerous to handle the stuff.

Also there are more cheaper solid state batteries coming
on to the market. How long before you put in a sodium
battery behind each solar panel is an interesting question.

NiMH cells does not seem to be dangerous.
( I do not imply any conclusions wrt batteries and transportations )

It need not to be involved in battery nor transportation at all.

Should I bother to answer your question,

Procrastinate why don't you?

There is no practical use for hydrogen fuel with 20x less
energy content than gasoline.

It would be a disaster building cars with 20x size
tanks for the same journey, and 20x more hydrogen
fuel tankers on the roads just makes it an exercise
in piddling with yet more 'green' energy trolls 
that cost more energy than saves.

E.g. for 50 KWh LiIon it was calculated
0.39 euro / 1 kWh / cycle
What is quite a lot

Lithium ion is not cheap. But sodium ion will be.
And grid storage doesn't care that much about weight.

For now they are more expensive.

What about using metallic hydrogen?  Would take up less space!

But the gravity of Saturn needed to keep it that way takes a bit of space.
