John cannot think that way.
John believes there are laws of nature that his common sense tells him
are true:
"Everything has structure."
"Everything is made of smaller things, and it's self-similar at any scale."
"Everything has shape and size, and how it works is determined by those
things, because that's how solid objects work."

And it's impossible for him to challenge his common sense, because he
doesn't have anything else. If measurements come back and say those holy
laws are wrong, then the measurements are wrong. Any theory that doesn't
respect those laws is therefore immediately nonsensical. Because those
laws are holy and immutable and no sense can be had, according to John,
without them.

Now, if you ask him about table salt and ask about its structure, he'll
point to the cubic grains he can see under a microscope. Now have him
dissolve those cubic grains in water and ask him what has happened to
the cubes, the critical shape that defines salt. He'll go mute -- stone
dumb mute. Because his brain cannot process it at all.
