They wrote the following: "Special Relativity predicts that a moving standard clock will record less time compared with (real or hypothetical) coordinate clocks distributed at rest in an inertial reference space". Do you understand what they said there? Do you see that "will record" is quite different from "will tick"? Then they wrote: "For low coordinate speeds (u^2<<c^2), the ratio of times recorded by the moving and reference coordinate clocks reduces to (1-u^2/2c^2), where c is the speed of light." Here they are using the time dilation formula, which says: Delta t' = 1/(sqrt(1-u^2/c^2) Delta t Where 1/(sqrt(1-u^2/c^2) for u^2<<c^2 reduces to (1-u^2/2c^2)

When you say that an astronaut sees himself as stationary and the earth as moving below him, that is just like a passenger on a train seeing the train as stationary and the railroad station as moving. It is AN ILLUSION! You seem to think it has something to do with reality! The astronaut and the train passenger KNOW they are moving. They know what and illusion is. An illusion is "amusing." But it has no other value. If someone does some math that assumes the ISS or train is stationary and the earth is moving relative to them, they will be ASSUMING that such a thing is real. No intelligent person would do that. What purpose would it serve? Ed

May be in philosophy, but in physics we are interested in making predictions and verify or falsify those predictions with experiments. In the ISS, astronauts do exactly that, they perform experiments to check several scientific topics. For all those experiments, they consider the ISS to be at rest. That the ISS is moving with respect to Earth, the Moon, the Sun, the Galaxy, is totally irrelevant (non of those parameters appear in the equations the ISS scientists use). > The astronaut and the train passenger KNOW they are moving. I said that "seeing the station move" when aboard a train is an illusion. It is also an "illusion" that the train is standing still. That does not make anything else an "illusion." It is also an illusion that the person who is far away from you is smaller than the person next to you. No one in their right mind would believe that people actually get smaller when they move away from you. Ed

I think this discussion might get somewhere if we could just focus on one or two issues instead of arguing a dozen different things at once. 1. Velocity time dilation is NOT reciprocal. That should be easy to confirm. Clocks on GPS satellites would run slower than earthbound clocks because the satellites are traveling at 14,000 kilometers per hour (kph) while the earth spins at 1,600 kph. Under what circumstances would the GPS clock be seen to travel at a slower speed than the earth clock? If it can't, how can VTD be reciprocal? 2. Hafele and Keating measured time dilation differences between a clock at the Naval Observatory in Washington and four clocks they carried with them on their trips around the world. If we just viewed the eastbound trip where the USNO clock moved at about 1,000 mph while the clocks H&K carried traveled at about 1,600 mph, how can that motion be reciprocal? Ed

Secondly, using GPS and the equatorial speed of the ground, with respect to the center of Earth, is misleading, since the GPS satellites do not have equatorial orbits!! On the other hand, in the Hafele-Keating experiment, the problem was more controlled (all the flights were closer to the Equator). In the eastward part the airplane is moving at 1600 miles/hour and the ground at 1000 miles per hour, both relative to the center of the Earth. Quite clearly the airplane is moving FASTER than the ground. In the westward part the airplane is moving at 400 miles/hour and the ground at 1000 miles/hour, both relative to the center of the Earth. Quite clearly the ground is moving FASTER than the airplane. All this predicts the following (this is the relativistic speed time dilation predictions as seen in Table 1 of the paper): Eastward: The airplane clock LOSES 184±18 nanoseconds. Westward: The airplane clock GAINS 96±10 nanoseconds. > 2. Physicists are interested in performing experiments(at their locations), so what a physicist doing experiments inside a train needs, is to predict the results of his experiment and also predict how that experiment would be observed from the ground frame. It turns out that considering the ground moving at a speed -v, with respect to the train observer, gives the correct results, as an observer in the ground can testify.

You totally misunderstand relativity. They perform experiments in their respective "frames" and get identical results. HOWEVER, due to the FACT that time ticks at different rates in different "frames," the results are not really identical. When you take compare time rates BETWEEN frames, you find that things happened faster in the frame that was moving slower. Ed

Why experiments performed in different frames would give identical results? SR and GR say, on the contrary, that most of those results are frame dependent (like periods of time, lengths, etc.). In SR the only thing that is constant is c the speed of light in vacuum.

I cannot understand your version of English. But IDENTICAL experiments performed in different frames give IDENTICAL results because the LAWS OF PHYSICS are the same in the different frames. SR and GR say that EVEN THOUGH the results APPEAR to be identical, they are actually DIFFERENT because TIME moves at different rates in the different frames. The laws of physics include variables, and time is a variable. So, if you measure the speed of light to be 299,792,458 meters PER SECOND, that is YOUR SECOND. YOUR SECOND may be of a different length than someone else's second. > > In SR the only thing that is constant is c the speed of light in vacuum. And as stated above, the speed of light is NOT constant. It is measured to be 299,792,458 meters PER SECOND in every reference frame, but every reference frame could have SECONDS of different lengths. Ed

All frames has to be identical. Any frames. Just think.

For sure, if I drop a boll inside a moving train, I will see the ball falling right to the floor. If I perform the same experiment on the embankment I also will see the ball falling right to the floor. Both results are due to the laws of physics apply both to the enbankment and to the moving train. However, for the embankment observer, the ball the train observer drops, for sure will not fall down to the floor, but it will follow a parabolic trajectory. In SR, the Lorentz Transformation Equations allow us to explain why the results of the ONE experiment is measured to be different and frame dependent. > SR and GR say that EVEN THOUGH the results APPEAR to be identical, they are > actually DIFFERENT because TIME moves at different rates in the different > frames.
