This is so because we will be measuring the amplitude and phase of continuous waves relative to the initial laser light. Measurements will be taken as a function of both L and v; changing L will take minutes to hours, changing v will happen continuously as the rod swings back-and-forth (it is suspended from the ceiling). For a given L, we can measure the dependency of phase and amplitude on v, regardless of where the photodetector is located, even not being between the two mirrors (flexible fibers permit this); this presumes the fibers on the rod are kept rigid and at constant temperature, and we will do that. One could think of the measurement at v=0 as determining how far off center the photodetector is. But this has the problem of an unknown number of integral wavelengths, so we won't do that. We will simply keep everything on the rod at fixed places and measure amplitude and phase as a function of v as the rod swings smoothly back-and-forth. For the accelerations involved (< 0.1 g), it is straightforward to mount components on the rod that remain in one place to the accuracy required. Tom Roberts

As with virtually all experiments, reducing the systematic errors will require constructing the apparatus and MEASURING them. We can't do that until we have the equipment. For instance, we don't expect temperature variations to be a problem, as that can only affect the fibers on the rod -- that will probably be a 1" diameter stainless steel rod with a groove machined in for the fiber, which is held in place with something like clay or sealing wax. So the fiber will be in good thermal contact with that rather heavy rod. We can easily measure the effect of temperature variations by keeping it at rest and applying a hair dryer. If there is an effect, we can wrap the rod in insulating foam, and we can build an enclosure around the apparatus and control the temperature inside. Variations on time scales longer than minutes won't matter at all. Our lab already has air temperature constant to ~ 1 C over timescales of hours. As for measuring v, we can enlist the effort of students in mechanical engineering and have them make an accurate model of the swinging rod (including flexing of the cables supporting it and the drag of signal cables connecting to it), and fit the parameters of the model to the hundreds of measurements we will take during each swing. This should reduce the errorbar on v considerably. Tom Roberts

Tom will be working with a 5 meter light path through jacketed fiber (far less sensitive to variable air pressure effects and insulated as necessary against temperature changes) with the apparatus swinging every few seconds in a room with modern environmental temperature control. The sources of error in MMX and RoS can legitimately be compared with one another. As has been explained to you, Michelson and Morley needed to equalize their path arms because they worked with white light with extremely short coherence length. People repeating the MMX experiment using monochromatic light did not need to make the arms anywhere near so nearly equal, nor did they have to compensate for unequal dispersion in the two arms (example: Joos). I have already explained why early researchers worked with white light rather than monochromatic light. Modern re-enactments of MMX take place in the frequency domain using cryogenic optical oscillators, and the length requirements are far different than when measuring fringe displacements.

Good, you are starting to learn. You still have a long way to go. Tom's experiment has nothing to do with MMX. Actually, its theory is closer to (an ill conceived) KTX. Since you don't know the differences between MMX and KTX you are reduced to pontificating. You are getting closer and closet to the Stephane Baune (rotchm) pretender.

"After putting the covers on, one could already recognize interference in the telescope. The more exact calibration of the optical paths took place then by means of the colors appearing in the unfiltered Hg-light. An equality exact on light wave length is not necessary by this way." Joos' experimental arrangement was stable enough that he could record the fringes photographically using monochromatic light. Since he used monochromatic light, getting the legs APPROXIMATELY equal was all that was necessary. Have you looked up the reasons why Michelson and Morley, Dayton Miller etc. preferred to use white light?

At the center of the rod, the two beams are diverted to the photodetector where they combine. Since you want RoS effects to be mostly confined to the rod rather than taking place within the fibers, you want the fibers to be more or less at right angles to the rod and the amplitude of the rod swings to be, at most, no more than a few centimeters. I'm leaving out stuff like optical isolators etc. With proper care of the geometry of the system, my rough order-of-magnitude calculation suggests that the phases of the two beams at the ends of the rods, in the frame of the laboratory, can easily be kept constant to 0.001 wavelength or better. If the rod is 4 meters long and with a maximum speed of 1 m/s, you should be getting differential phase shifts on the order of hundredths of a wavelength. Am I on the right track?

Why not simply use a rigid scaffolding to keep two long sections of single-mode fiber straight, combining the two beams in the middle at the photodetector? I'm a little uncomfortable with the internal reflections that may occur in a transparent rod.
