Irrelevant: the light moves through fibers moving wrt the lab, the speed of light is not isotropic in the fiber when measured wrt the lab. Moreover. there is no way to prove that the light speed in the fiber legs leading to the two ends of the rod are equal. Therefore, you have no way of proving that the light pulses emanate at the same time from the two ends of the rod as measured in the lab frame.

Light speed is anisotropic in each cable, the speed in one direction is different from the speed in the opposite direction It is indeed possible for RoS aka dragging effects to be operative in the connecting cables. Such dragging effects will be measured in control experiments, and they can be minimized by careful attention paid to the geometry of the experiment. > 4. What can be done is to keep the phase of the return light in a constant relationship with the outbound light. Sort of like setting up a standing wave in the cable so that the light at a mirror will have a fixed phase. > > regardless of temperature and flexing variations in the fiber. > > Wishful thinking. The ***ONLY*** point in your above screed that makes any sense is that yes, RoS effects that are operative in the "rod" section of the experiment can also be active to a lesser extent in the cables connecting the lasers to the "rod", so that there can be a small directional dependence of light speed in the connecting cables due to cable motion. This was the point that I was referring to in my post July 29, 2016 at 10:47:21 PM UTC-5 when I mentioned the need to take "proper care of the geometry of the system." Tom has, of course, planned control experiments to measure the extent of these and other uncorrected effects.

You know, both of you have danced around the description of the experiment but neither of you has given a coherent description. What arrives at the photodetector is continuous light from both ends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm leaving out a ***very*** important detail, but for now, let us say that the light from each end meets to form an interference pattern at the photodetector. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Consider this illustration of a traveling wave (blue) going from left to right, and its reflection (red). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Standing_wave_2.gif Imagine that the mirror at the right is not totally reflective, but allows some of the blue light to pass through into the rod. The light exiting the mirror on the right has a certain phase relationship with the light emitted from the origin at the left. If the transmission line stretches, or if its refractive index changes due to temperature change or bending, the light exiting the mirror on the right will be experience a phase shift relative to the incoming light, and the interference pattern in the rod will shift. By monitoring the return beam and comparing the return beam's phase relationship with the outgoing beam, Tom can control the degree of stretch in a "fiber stretcher" to effectively increase/decrease the length of the transmission line to compensate for stretching/bending/temperature changes. In this manner, Tom can assure that light exiting the mirror maintains a fixed phase relationship with the origin light. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now, here is an important point that I missed, and which Tom corrected me on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The simple scheme that I outlined cannot deal with anisotropies of the speed of light within the transmission line from RoS/dragging effects due to movements of the transmission line. Any delays/advances in the outgoing beam will be (almost) matched by advances/delays in the return beam, the residuals being of second order only. But through his *control experiments*, Tom can detect and measure these dragging effects. Since the motions of the experimental apparatus are periodic, Tom knows how much additional compensation he needs to apply at each point in the swing cycle.

The important point is to assure that the light beams, as they enter the rod, maintain a CONSTANT PHASE RELATIONSHIP with their respective sources, so that the interference pattern that they generate as they meet up at the photodetector is stable. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is leaving out the important detail that I told you I would get to later. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As it stands, it isn't what it claims to be.

You therefore acknowledge that, in the frame of the lab, it is possible to maintain a constant phase relationship between a light beam as it exits the laser source, with the beam as it enters the rod. Very good. If the rod is moving in the frame of the lab, then the interference fringes formed at the photodetector will shift depending on the rod's movements due to variations in the distance that the light needs to travel. This is *precisely* the effect that Tom's experiment is intended to measure.

Are you claiming that Michelson and Morley's experiment was stupid because they weren't using a pulsed laser, and therefore could not establish that the light beams traversing the two legs of their interferometer were taking exactly the same time? Because that is pretty much the type of argument that you are making.

I was waiting for this imbecility, quite to be expected from a fraud like you In MMX the beams of light are GUARANTEED to be in synch by virtue of originating in a COMMON point (the prism splitter). This is NOT true in Tom's experiment, the beams arrive to the ends of the rod via TWO SEPARATE paths.

Nope. In re-enactments of the MMX experiment using a laser light source, the two paths can be widely divergent and you will STILL get fringes. The important point in MMX is not whether you can guarantee that the light has traversed the same distance along the two legs of the interferometer. The important point is whether the fringes drift as you rotate the apparatus. The important point in the RoS experiment is not whether you can guarantee that the light traverses the same distance between the ends of the rod and the photometer. The important point is whether the fringes drift as you swing the rod. (N.B. Michelson and Morley's ORIGINAL experiment established that the distances along the two legs of the interferometer were the same, but that is the topic of a different story.)

Of course you get fringes. The issue is that the wavefronts originate in a COMMON point BEFORE following "widely divergent paths". This is NOT the case for TOM's experiment, he cannot guarantee that the two fiberoptics are of the same length. This this why Michelson (and the others after him) took great pains to ensure that the interferometer paths are EQUAL. Sorry. The definitive pre-WWII re-enactment of the MMX experiment (the Joos experiment) made only an APPROXIMATE attempt at equalizing the paths. > Nope, you are showing your total ignorance relative to the experiment. No contradiction. I would imagine that you don't have any inkling of *how* Michelson and Morley knew when they had achieved equal path lengths, or *why* they cared.
