Kids are taught in schools to be uncritical of bad scientific procedure, as long as it leads to the desired experimental results (the ones that lead to praise from the teacher and higher coursework marks). 
One tends NOT to get praise and higher marks for pointing out that the experiment itself is deeply flawed, and not to be taken at face value.

Here's someone's analysis of the classic schoolroom "burning a candle in a bell jar" test to measure the proportion of oxygen in the air:

Basically, because the candle stops burning when the oxygen level drops to a critical point that is not zero, the only way to get the magical 20% figure and obtain a high score for experimental coursework is to embrace bad experimental technique, and get the right answer for the wrong reasons.
