Wrong Gauss theorem.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauss%27s_law
[the article is about electrostatic, but the
theorem work for Newtonian gravitation too. ]

Mass. Matter. Above the surface there is no matter,
below it there is matter;-)

If you do not have a "physical intuition", just solve
equations (for simplicity for homogeneous planet). With gauss
theorem is easy. Without it, with only integral over dm r/|r|^3
it is a bit harder, you need basic calculus. But Newton have done
it, and ha had to invented calculus;-) And science students
are solving this exercise every year.

As a consolation prize you can get, that while _force_
decrees when going into a planet, the gravitational potential
is at the maximum at the centre.

As I said before, you googled different Gauss law that they have
in mind.
