Well yes. But this is a forum about relativity, not about conspiracies.

I actually don't think, that 'conspiracy' would be necessary. It just 
took some kind of order from high in the hierarchy and Lemaitre got his 
doctorate.

But he was also a priest and wearing unjustified scientific titles is 
certainly not, what priests should do.

The reason to regard such a title as highly questionable is the following:

if academic titles are granted for other reasons than studying and 
scientific research,  than the titles earned for hard work by real 
scientists is devaluated by false titles.

So it is immoral to use a title usually awarded for academic work 
without such work.

That is like theft of something immaterial and that is something, what 
priests are not expected to do.
