The historic scientific reality that you snipped is that several scientists were doing experiments 50 years after 1839 and so on, still believing that one of the original wave theories of light had to be correct and looking for any of the proposed luminiferous ethers to support that; even after 1905/1914 when all of them were shown to be insufficient.
