English is the 'modern Esperanto' or 'lingua franca' and serves as 
language for international communication.

This has actually little to do with the actual language 'English' as 
spoken on the British Isles.

It is more an agreement, which helps to communicate around the globe.

BTW: Germans are by no means the people with the best knowledge of 
English as a second language.

That are, afiak, the people of Finnland.
