Just as a toss in, my son was the victim of a hit and run...
by a bicyclist. Knocked him out for a short time, someone called an
ambulance that took him to the hospital. Xrays and stitches in his leg
and head. I was running through the billing codes and noted the
emergency room added 1-1/2" to his head laceration which was an extra
charge vs the shorter laceration. I didn't complain, but it did piss me
off. Also, my daughter showed up about 24 hrs after he got out of the ER
and found they didn't clean him up at all. His hair was blood matted,
his body had several scrapes and bruises not cleaned.
My daughter cleaned him up. She called me to report he is minimizing the
extent on his injuries.
She was out of town when it happened and lives 2 hrs from him, I'm
4-1/2 hrs from him. I offered to come to him, and offered to bring him
to my home for recuperation. "no I'll be alright dad" and he is.

I can't think of anything else that I can do to keep myself healthy
AND keep the costs for my health care down.

Hard to know whether that was an "honest mistake" or a deliberate fraud.

I spent an afternoon in an ER many years ago. Got a bill with 4 "extra"
line items on it: the first two were things I clearly didn't have done
(I mean *clearly* -- like "amputate left leg" and "apply cast to right leg")
and the next two were CREDITS for those first two items. WTF? You not
only mistakenly bill me for two things but then credit me for them? Why
not just remove them from the bill entirely??

And, of course, *he* didn't care -- he just "wanted to go home"!

Glad for that. *Any* visit to the hospital is fraught with risk -- from
the CARE GIVERS! (hint: always have an advocate with you if hospitalized)

SWMBO worked for one of the local hospitals for many years. Usually, in pretty
significant offices -- where she was privy to lots of stuff they don't want
disclosed (i.e., "There will be no minutes taken in this meeting; we'll decide
what we're going to write down AFTER we're done!")

She'd come home with all sorts of horror stories -- both from that hospital
and information shared from the other 8-10 hospitals in town.

I expect people to make mistakes -- "they're only human". But, I also expect
folks to put in place processes and procedures to try to minimize the number of
those mistakes and their consequences. In the case of her hospital, they
were self-insured. So, every employee effectively got their hospital-related
care from THAT hospital (huge financial disincentive to go elsewhere).

With that in mind, you (*I*) would think the employees would be extra diligent;
wanting to give the *best* care cuz it's likely that some of their colleagues
are receiving care, there, each day! And, someday, they may find themselves in
that position as well! (do they think the conscientiousness of their fellow
employees will magically improve just before *they* need care? why -- if it
isn't improving now as their colleagues need care?)

It wasn't you that I'm concerned about, it's convincing others.

Lol! That's a wasted effort in this group.

Have to show people other ways of thinking about issues BEFORE you
can expect them to "take the initiative" and think for themselves.
But, can't *make* someone shed their emotional clinging to illogical
convictions.

E.g., my comment re: hospital employees not wanting to "give their all"
to ensure the care THEY get will be the "best possible". Until you
get folks thinking about how their attitude can *hurt* them WHEN HELD
BY THEIR COLLEAGUES, they're unlikely to think about the effort they
expend.

If it wasn't so sad/depressing, it would be highly amusing to point out
folks' inconsistencies to them.

I was speaking with a neighbor some years back and another neighbor
joined us and got into a rant about the HoA notifying him that he
had too many weeds in his yard, yada yada yada: "What business is
it of theirs what my yard looks like? It's *my* property! I can
treat it however I like!"

The other neighbor replied, straight-faced: "Absolutely right!
If I want to put up a MEAT RENDERING facility here, I should be
free to do so! After all, it's MY property!"

Silence.

I guess it never occurred to the first neighbor to consider how the
"freedom" he was claiming might HURT him if afforded to the rest
of us. Ooops!

Arguably yes, but, before Obamacare, he was able to do it for one-third of
what it costs him today.

Cheers,
