_Dark Grid: When The Lights Go Out...Permanently._ (The Dark Grid Series) (Volume 1) by David C. Waldron
    http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Grid-Lights-Permanently-Series/dp/1468079158/

Book number one of a three book series. I purchased the trade paperback format in POD (print on demand). I have ordered the other
two books in the trilogy.

What would have happened to the world if the CME (coronal mass ejection) event of 2012 had not missed the planet? This book (and
series) is a conjecture into the effects of that type of event. Basically, all of the entire electrical grids on the planet are
irretrievably destroyed due to high voltages and currents. So are cell phone grids, etc. Computers not connected to the grid or
protected are not destroyed so cars still work. Please note that the book was written before the 2012 CME event, it is just a
conjecture.
    http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2014/23jul_superstorm/

The book follows a small group of people in Tennessee as they work together to survive in the new world without the rule of law and
minimal communications.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars (257 reviews)

After "One Year After", my take on all EMP stories is "throw it at the
wall on general principle".

I know I've read (well, played as audiobooks) both One Second After and
One Year After, but for the life of me, I can't remember a blinkin'
thing about either of them beyond the "lost the juice" backdrop, and a
vague "Why did I bother?" feeling. Oh, wait - didn't they take place in

I have yet to read _One Year After_. Bad, I take it?
    http://www.amazon.com/One-Year-After-A-Novel/dp/0765376709

62% of the 872 reviewers on Amazon gave it 5 stars. Of course, there were 5,754 reviewers for its predecessor, _One Second After_.

Why would there not be law? Prior to 1934, Tennessee pretty much didn't
have electricity outside of Nashville and Memphis. That's a good two
centuries of European settlement with law and without electricity.

And cars are a lot faster than horses, and bicycles are a lot more useful
on paved roads than on dirt or gravel roads, so communications will, if
anything, be more efficient than 1730-1910.

Oh, and the wires are still up for telephones. 5ESS switches are generally
well protected against overvoltage, but even if they have to go back to
Strowger switches (1891) they can get those up and running, or code-key
telegraph services before that.

Yeah, intercity telegraph and in-city bicycle messengers. There's a
business opportunity there.

Not to mention light aircraft (minimal or no electronics) and lots of
commercial aircraft (hardened against lightning strikes).

Disastrous to the web economy? Survival and continuity of government? Not
so badly off.

No power when all of the backup generators run out of fuel in a week to a month. And very few backup generators have more than a
week of fuel.

Getting the three electric grids back up in the USA will require many years, maybe a couple of decades. No ten+ million dollar
spares ready for all the fried transformers, motors, and generators. After all, it has taken 100 years to build the three electric
grids in the USA.

As a firearms hobbyist, I've see this. There are some 'preppers' out there
who secretly yearn for TEOTWAWKI so they can get out and be the hero they
know they'd be if only their wives would let them.

In my experience, the overwhelming majority of US gunowners in this situation
would get in touch with the local PD to see if and how they can help maintain
public safety.

One suspects that many of the "preppers" automatically see the police as
EVIL because -they- have guns. (Maybe with a "too" at the end of that,
maybe not.)

BTW, the book is about a National Guard unit in the USA.

Or at least about the author's fantasies about what a National Guard

For the same reason that there was no law in New Orleans after Hurricane
Katrina?
