The Hauppauge PVR-150 framegrabber is installed in a PC and an old MTI camera is connected for tests. The camera output appears to be recognized by the V4L2 Test Bench. A screenshot, with the camera on, is here. http://easthope.ca/MTItoPVR150screen.jpg If the camera is powered off the "image" changes from the screenshot to scattered lines. I expect the image to be a 2x3 or 3x4 rectangle rather than the narrow band in the screenshot. Synchronization is failing? Faulty framegrabber? Suggestions? Thanks, ... I would start with making sure the cable to the camera is good, then check that you've set the right input. -dsr-

Tried three different coax cables. All give essentially the window
illustrated in http://easthope.ca/MTItoPVR150screen.jpg . Bright
strip at the top; black below.

When the camera is powered on and off the pattern in the bright strip
changes. Video mute makes the same change. Composite 1 must be
right.

Installed it yesterday. Have read all the settings in the V4L2 Test
Bench and understand about 1/3 rd of them. Haven't yet studied
settings in v4l2-ctl.
The "General Settings" in the V4L2 Test Bench are understandable.
Several of them are set automatically and consistent with specs on the
JVC camera. Seems there should be a reasonable output image rather
than just a white strip above black.
There is no switch or trimmer on the Hauppauge card to be set wrong.
Wondering about a faulty card. Tempted to get another from the store.
If it gives the same output, I'll be more convinced of a problem in
software configuration.
Thanks for the help. This has become a non-trivial problem,
... P.

The coax connector on the PVR150 expects to be connecting a CATV signal. Is your camera sending that? If so, which channel? You'll need to set the PVR150's tuner to match. You should also have inputs for RCA composite and SVideo Y/C, which don't need to be tuned. -dsr-

Specs for a similar camera here. http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/specs.jsp?model_id=MDL100970&feature_id=03 It can connect to the receiving device via a coaxial cable with a BNC connector on each end. The PVR-150 receives composite video through a RCA socket. An adapter is used to connect the BNC on the end of the cable to the RCA on the card. > The coax connector on the PVR150 expects to be connecting a CATV > signal. This card has two female F connectors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F_connector Nothing is connected to either. > You should also have inputs for RCA composite and SVideo Y/C, > which don't need to be tuned. Here using only the RCA connector. Unless a new idea surfaces this morning, I'll buy another card in the afternoon and find whether the display is different with that. Thanks for the help, ... Same window content from a 2nd Hauppauge card and I replaced the first card. The device file dialogues to open the stream aren't reasonable. The default device in VLC is /dev/dvb/video0 but /dev/dvb doesn't exist. It must be a default compiled in or from a configuration file. VLC and Test Bench show /dev/v4l/by-path/ as empty whereas it contains four files. In a terminal, copied "pci-0000:02:0d0-video-index1" to the clipboard, selected /dev/v4l/by-path/ in the dialogue and pasted the file name "pci-00 ...". The "Open" button was inactive but "Enter" opened the device. Test Bench then gave a plausible image from the camera. One problem solved. Didn't get the media selection in VLC to work yet but the effort with Test Bench should help. I left it there and will resume next week. When we have a reasonable image from the microscope, will post another report. Any ideas about the faulty device dialogue. A dependancy not respected? Thanks again, ... With a manual setting of the device path and ID, the V4L2 Test Bench produced this image from the JVC camera on the microscope. http://easthope.ca/JVCtoPVR150screen.jpg Setting the device in the Test Bench each time it is opened becomes tedious and no /etc/*v4l* exists. Can the default conifiguration be adjusted permanently without recompiling? How? Although too dark, the image from the microscope slide is faintly visible. The upper half of the image is on the bottom of the screen and the lower half is at the top. On a VCR I might try adjusting vertical sync. Is there an equilent in the Test Bench? Thanks, ... The linux-media list at majordomo@vger.kernel.org might be your best resource, here. -dsr-
