#174042 — Alternative to Adobe Reader, anyone?

Frombrian <brian@meadows.pair.com>

SubjectAlternative to Adobe Reader, anyone?
Message-ID<sy0ZX-6XS-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Does anyone have any suggestions for a program which will print PDF
files **scaling them to fit the page**. This last part is essential! A
program which just did expansion to fit would be a good second best.

What *doesn't* work :-

Acrobat Reader: It does the 'fit to page' but the version I have
(9.5.5) will not print a *single* copy of a file. If you ask it to
print one copy, you get a popup with an lpr error message that you
asked for zero copies. Ask for two copies, you get two copies...

Okular: Prints single copies OK but doesn't have the 'fit to page'
feature.

I'm running 64-bit testing and XFCE, should anyone feel that's
relevant.

Thanks,

Brian.

Can you (or someone) let me have a non-A4 pdf file to test. All my files seem
to be A4 in the first place, so I can't test whether they would adjust to
fit!! Evince used to do so, but it has lost a lot of what I used to use - or
I cannot access it.

I have used evince for that for quite some time.

Thanks everyone. I hadn't previously heard of evince, but I can
confirm that it does do what's needed, and will print single copies.

(Note to Brad Rogers - no idea why I see the problem and you don't,
but it's 100% reproducible here.)

to go from there. Web searches shed no light. :-(

qpdfview has a "Fit to page" option in its print dialog under Options /
Extended Options, but I have not tested it.

I am running XFCE on 64-bit unstable.

Hi
"fit to page" function depends on printer driver settings, not printer
software.
You may change your cups/printer settings:

Where? In which section can you make the change you suggest? I remember and
have set a setting for turning pages if necessary, but not one for fitting to
printable area.

Maybe it is a "lpr" option:

https://www.cups.org/doc/options.html

(See "Scaling to Fit")

Thanks! That is helpful. If I hit the problem I'll look into doing it that
way. Evince worked last time I needed it to do so, and people are saying
that it still does.

It depends on many paramaters, for example, postcript printer or not
postscript. In my case, postscript printer, with applications like
evince, firefox, etc..., printing works same way with CTRL+P, then
choose -> page handling -> 'fit to printable area' or 'shrink...' or
'none...'. I think it is the same for non postscript.

The nature of the printer does not matter. Scaling to Fit with the
"fit-to-page" option is a CUPS feature. It is passed on to the pdftopdf
filter of cups-filters and can be set with lpr or from those
applications which send a file directly to CUPS *without* any previous
manipulation of it.

The 'fit to printable area' option in the print dialogs of GTK
applications such as evince is handled by the GTK printing subsystem
with Cairo. Cairo manipulates the file to achieve fitting the image to
the printable area *before* it gets sent to CUPS.

Okular does not manipulate a file in an evince-like way. It sends the
CUPS "fit-to-page" option with every job, but, as observed, there is no
"fit-to-page" option in its print dialog to switch it on and off. This
is probably the subject of bug report somewhere.

Thank you. I'll start watching. The "trouble" is that computers are
sometimes intelligent little beasties, and I very rarely want to print
anything that isn't A4 in the first place - so when I am not always offered
the chance to adjust the size it may be because it isn't necessary! I _do_
get offered the chance to switch landscape to portrait.

You final sentence is what interests me.

What would expect to happen if you chose "portrait" over "landscape"?

Bear in mind most printers feed paper in short-edge first.

Portrait is the default. If I do not ask it to turn a landscape image round,
a high percentage of it will be outside the printing area and I would have
tramlines at the top and bottom of the page.

Put a landscape image over the top of a portrait oriented sheet of paper and
you'll see what I mean.

I understand what you mean. If we are still talking in the context of
Evince, the "Landscape" and "Portrait" options are handled by Cairo, not
CUPS. If you select "Landscape", Cairo rotates *every" page in the PDF
by 90 degrees if the page width is *less* than the height. If you had a
842x595 sized pages they would not be rotated. Effectively, the option
does nothing. Or rather - it doesn't do what you think it does.

But (you say). the printout is OK. That's because you have the "Auto
Rotate and Centre" option ticked. Nothing to do with "Landscape"
selected.

Even if you forgot to tick "Auto Rotate and Centre" and sent a 842x595
page to the printer it will still be printed correctly because the
pdftopdf filter of cups-filters automatically rotates landscape pages by
90 degrees before printing.

It must be my printer that is doing it then. I agree that if the image will fit I am asked nothing. But if I have a landscape A4 image I am asked if I want it rotated to portrait.

My current Evince has gone mad anyway and I have not yet battled it. I am just using kpdf-trinity most of the time. I rarely need to do more to a pdf than read it. I can't check what the default ticks in Evince are because I can't currently get at any of the settings. I have altered nothing in it. I can't get at it!!
