Il supporto USB è disponibile in Windows 95C (OSR 2.5) e in alcune versioni di Windows 95B (OSR 2.1), entrambe disponibili solo per il mercato OEM. Da notare che il supporto USB non era comunque integrato nel sistema operativo al momento dell'installazione, ma era necessario installare due aggiornamenti per attivarlo (mi pare si chiamassero usbsupp.exe e usbupd2.exe). Windows 98 è stata la prima versione retail a supportare USB nativamente. Ciò detto, ricordo che, escluse le periferiche HID (mouse, tastiere e joystick), tutti gli altri dispositivi USB (inclusi dischi e chiavette) richiedono dei driver per funzionare su Windows 95 e 98. Poichè lo standard USB si è diffuso solo dopo il 1999, periferiche con driver per 95 e 98 prima versione sono piuttosto rare. Più frequenti invece periferiche con driver per Windows 98SE e ME, sia perchè, quando le periferiche erano vendute, questi erano sistemi operativi ancora diffusi, sia perchè con Windows 98SE venne introdotto il formato WDM per i driver, che permetteva allo stesso driver (se correttamente programmato) di funzionare sotto Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 e XP.
