James, you're misreading what I'm saying again. When I say physics may
not
be sufficient to explain everything we care about — consciousness,
morality,
aesthetic experience — I don't mean there's ghosts in the
machine. I mean
that explaining the substrate doesn't necessarily explain the phenomenon
that
emerges from it. Reducing music to sound waves doesn't make a symphony any
less moving. It explains the mechanism, not the meaning.
As Churchill once noted, some truths become clearer only after you've
spent years wrestling with them. Science has an extraordinary track record
for filling empirical gaps -- absolutely. But there's a distinction
between
explaining how something works and accounting for what it feels
like to be
human inside it. That's where the debate lives. And no, I'm not invoking
magic. I'm just refusing to pretend the question doesn't exist. Your
