Another one solved, top marks for you tonight Dave ;-)

Was able to force re-install via package manager, but it made no 
difference.

When minimised, Pan was hiding behind the desktop.  Alt-tab brings it 
back, a chance discovery on my part.  Have now set "Hide to system 
tray" in Pan miscellaneous settings.  This creates a Pan icon over on 
the right hand side of the task bar in the system tray where a click on 
that will bring it back. Maybe that is a default setting and I have 
messed with it but I don't recall doing so.
