APL and Basic are very different languages. Basic is a simple, pretty straightforward, interpretative language that mimics a lot of FORTRAN. APL is a much more abstracted language, and one we should look a bit more closely to for further language development. I call them "surface languages", where they are pretty tailored to the application at hand. Yes, APL is pretty tailored to a branch of mathematics. The level of abstraction has the consequence that it doesn't matter so much that it is interpreted, because it does much bigger chunks of processing for every token. (Yes, IMNSHO APL goes a bit overboard in terseness; but that is me). I see way to few such languages, and the ones I see are overly complicated and does not bring much joy. Like the sendmail.cf language. Or the asterisk extensions.conf one. The kamailio one is a lot better. All of these are rulesets, but very powerful ones. But they all lack in friendly and anti-bug syntax. One application that could do well with this is the spredsheet. I have seen some examples, but you need to integrate the language with the graphics. This is a tall order, I know. >I may be biased since my first programming language was Algol 60, but I >think that early introduction to block structured code and well specified >looping and conditional statements vastly helped my ability to think in >terms of well-structured programs and of setting out to write code which >other programmers would find easy to read and maintain. The "ruleset languages" I mentioned above are at best on par with Fortran 77, at worst worse than Fortran II. >Similarly, I'd prefer to teach OO programming in Java than C++ or Python >simply because you can't avoid using classes and their extensions in >Java, while its entirely possible to write class-free C++ or Python. Same >goes for Perl. OO is fair and good, but we need other methods too to gain the abstraction needed to tackle the multi-million LOC projects. OO also has definate performance impacts when done at the low-ish level of C++ and Java. Much better to have a proper level of abstraction first, so the OO works in larger chunks. Like the APL vs Basic interpretative performance. -- mrr We need more computer languages. Lots more.

Personally, I think I'd rather work L->R like this: a + b / c = result than R->L like this: result = c / b + a where both are equivalent to C's "result = (a + b) / c;" but I suppose thats a result of me learning to read (Roman) text L->R rather than R->L as is done in Arabic. The only PL/I documentation I have is for subset G and the only versions I've used was subset G on a Stratus fault tolerant box and IBM PL/I on an AS/400. Neither system produced financial reports or displays: the Stratus system was a message switch designed to transfer arbitrary messages between endpoints using any one of X.25, SNA LU2(3270 bisync) or SNA LU6 or DECnet. Yes it *was* a long time ago: look Ma, no TCP/IP. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

On a daily basis I deal with APL that somebody else wrote 20 or more years ago. Figuring out the APL is not terribly difficult, in part because of that right-to-left execution--figure out what the right end does and then go down the line one operator at a time until you have it. The problem is figuring out _why_ it's doing it and where the change needs to come to implement whatever adjustment needs to be implemented. > > I accept that > > I see way to few such languages, and the ones I see are overly > > complicated and does not bring much joy. > > > Forth is another, but one I find more readable than APL. > > > One application that could do well with this is the spredsheet. We have a huge pile of APL workspaces that are currently driven by an Excel spreadsheet. Named cells and named ranges are used all over that. > > OO also has definate performance impacts when done at the low-ish level > > of C++ and Java. APL's quad-FMT does it just fine on output. COBOL does have the edge though in read formatting. I believe though that that 2948.99 should be 2048.50 though. >

There exists a "compiler" for Rexx, for example, but the compilation it does is very limited, I suspect about the level of tokenization a BASIC interpreter does. You can "compile" each operator into a call to a subroutine that does the actual work depending on what arguments are passed to it. -- Pete

The marketers at big blue would have you call it z/OS but of course MVS is correct. IBM has bolted on a UNIX like sub-system which does a passable job of pretending to be UNIX. -- Dan Espen

IF you can persuade the Powers That Be to set up your account for it. It amazes me the stuff that's on our system that nobody has configured.

Yep. I was in a development shop and the setting up was not automatic (for reasons untold). But anyone could get one. I found take up by other developers was close to non-existent which probably had a lot to do with it. But then we had many systems available and I strongly preferred to use a Linux machine to USS. -- Dan Espen

Yes, that is the difference with a recent Windows version. The amount of code that DOES run and that you never need is so huge that you need a powerful machine just to bring you to a desktop. In the same amount of distribution size that a Linux system brings you a wealth of applications you never are going to use, Windows brings you only a desktop with file explorer and internet browser.
