I inherited Forth in a box of tapes for my old Spectrum in the 80s. It was called White Lightning Forth and totally unlike Sinclair Basic that it took ages for me to learn. A very nice language but I never actually managed to get it to do anything useful; I am unsure if that was a fault with me or the language but I suspect the former. I occasionally pop back into to it on different machines but I still never manage to do much with it. Andy

Rodnay Zaks had APL running natively on the Meta-4 so I guess it's not a high level language either.

Depends on what you are trying to do really, although I have seen object oriented extensions to Forth which should help with larger real-world business applciations. I believe it was also the core used for a few early interplanetary
probes. After one has built the base threaded interpreter and some core
operators in assembly, pretty much everything else is defining words to
perform actions.

I've said it before, one time someone involved with the amateur radio satellites came to town to talk at the local ham club, this was about 1977 or so, and he said they were using the RCA 1802 microprocessor because it was radiation hardened, but also because memory could be loaded remotely without a lot of hardware, or a monitor in ROM. SO that extensibility of FORTH sounds like it would be useful in probes and maybe satellites. Michael

IIRC there are under 100 lines of assembler in the lowest level words plus a single branch instruction that is executed to start the whole shebang running. This was about all there was in the executable: just enough code to load the first screen[1], which bootstrapped the rest. I should still have the Flex 9 port on a 5.25" floppy in a drawer somewhere. The situation was the same with the BASIC on that TRS-80... Never put spaces in your statements as they take up precious memory and slow down execution. Put as many statements on a single line as possible, as each new line took 5 bytes. Etc. I wrote a machine language monitor for the TRS-80 that had to fit in a 2716 EPROM (2 kilobytes) and by the time it was finished I regularly had to work through the sourcecode to save some bytes to get it all within the memory size limit...

Of course those tricks were used in this program as well. But also other tricks, like using linked lists of command execution routines that were searched by a small interpreter. In a later project I used a full "P-code machine" interpreter that would interpret pseudocode compiled from C and packed more functionality into the same memory than could be done in assembler. It would run slower, of course. In fact, the FORTH language mentioned in this thread could achieve the same thing.
