jmfbahciv <See.above@aol.com> writes: > Not in data base management work. That requires a different style of > thinking. A gray area is networking which is data base layers within > layers. re: http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/2016d.html#73 Is it a lost cause? long ago and far away, we were brought into small client/server startup that wanted to do payment transactions on their server, the startup had also invented this technology called "SSL" they wanted to use, the result is now frequently called "electronic commerce". I had absolute authority over the webserver to payment gateway implementation/operation (interface to financial networks) which has had no reported exploits ... but could only make recommendations as to the implementation/operation for the client/server interface. Almost immediately some number of the recommendations were violated, which continue to account for some number of exploits that continue to this day. Part of "SSL" involved variation on x.509 digital certificates ... which I fairly quickly started referring to as redundant and superfluous. some past posts http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/subpubkey.html#sslcerts At annual ACM SIGMOD (aka DBMS) meeting held in silicon valley during that period, in a full ballroom, somebody in the audience asked the panel what all this x.5xx stuff was about ... and one of the panel members said that it was a bunch of networking engineers trying to re-invent 1960s DBMS technology. disclaimer ... much earlier I was involved in the original relational/SQL implementation ... some past posts http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/submain.html#systemr when Jim Gray was leaving for Tandem, he was plaming stuff off on me. other topic drift june 17th of 1995 ... the largest online service provider started having some its internet facing servers crash. for the next two months they had everybody they could think of come in to look at it ... but it continued to crash. so aug. 17, somebody flew out to west coast and bought me a hamburger after work and while i ate it ... explained the symptoms. i then gave him a q&d work around patch that was applied later that night. afterwards i made the rounds of the usual vendors that sell stuff that involves tcp/ip and/or connecting to the internet ... suggesting that maybe they do something to address the problem; nobody was interested. almost exactly a year later a similar symptom hit a service provider in manhatten which made the press ... and now you saw the usual players telling the press about how fast they were addressing the problem. some past refs http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/2005c.html#51 [Lit.] Buffer overruns http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/2006e.html#11 Caller ID "spoofing" http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/2008l.html#21 recent mentions of 40+ yr old technology http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/2008n.html#35 Builders V. These c-language related vulnerabilities were the major source of exploits during much of the 90s. some past refs http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/subintegrity.html#buffer At the 1996 MSDC at Moscone all the banners said "internet" but the refrain in all the sessions was "preserve your investment". In the 80s, personal computers applications were extended to automatically executed (visual basic) scripts for small, safe, business local area networks. In the mid-90s, this LAN support was being extended to the internet with no additional vulnerability countermeasures (or change in environment of automatically executed scripts) for the wide-open anarchy of the internet. By the turn of the century, the exploits from automagic executed scripts had grown to they equaled the exploits from c-language related vulnerabilities. After-market business grew up attempting to recognize scripts with known exploit signatures (viruses). In the late 90s, before he passed, the internet standards editor had me give a talk about why the internet wasn't industry quality dataprocessing (what happens when you let little kids play with computers) ... antivirus&passwords were 20yr regression (Postel also used to let me help with STD1). some internet related posts http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/subnetwork.html#internet -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970

Then you're misreading me *still*. A good grounding in assembler is completely irrelevant, it just happened to be what sold at the time I started out (along with a facility for logic design) - had I started a few years later a good grounding in C and data structures would have been useful without ever having seen assembler, but a good grounding in assembler without those would have made life harder then. Starting today a good grounding in assembler is pretty much completely useless, but a thorough appreciation of OO design is valuable and a real grasp of scaling problems is very valuable. Judging by the things I'm reading though a really good understanding of machine deep learning is what will yield the big bucks over the next decade or so (that's PHD territory though). It makes me feel old to realise that I'll probably have to leave that all to the next generation. So no, what I confirm is that a person with ability who is willing to constantly learn new things can stay up to date and fit in anywhere once they get a toe in, but in order to do so you have to stay up to date and start with a skill that gets you a toe in. Assembler programming is not one such any more and hasn't been for decades. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

Quality software like Linux can never be produced by someone who was not willing to "stand on the shoulders of giants". Not only did Linus use Minix and FFS software as tools he based the OS on Unix and he read widely on operating system principles before he started writing.

I've worked on two systems that weer produced in double quick time by single-minded aces with no previous experience of the type of systems. A single-minded softy can produce systems that make normal (uninspired) programmers have to work in teams of 5. The outstanding example, of course, is Dave Cutler, with the previously uinforeseen techniques that he conceived of in RSX11 and later in Windows NT.

I was forgetting the railway braking system that I supported 2 1/2 years ago before terminating the contract myself because the software house through whom I was working took on defence work and I do not wish to be involved in any way with killing my fellow man.

The amount to learn gets more, things don't get "un-invented" but the time to learn it stays the same. For the last two years I have "taught" a course at a UK University on Windows Systems Administration. I get paid, and they don't run any VMS/UNIX/LINUX administration courses. The problem is as we move towards cloud based systems, and I administer a couple of web sites, which are cloud based, then the students really need to know a whole host of extra stuff, but they already struggle to cope with what is in the course. There is nothing I think should be missed out, so what do you do? I understand computers almost from the transistor up, BUT that is because when I started in 1970 the nearest thing there was to a PC was an IBM1130 or PDP8. I have had 50 years to learn all the crap in my head. What chance do todays students stand of learning it all. It makes business sense to teach them as little as possible to be remotely effective. So knowing 10% of how computers work is good enough for 90% of the programming they do. What they don't understand is that they only know 10% and that when they run into deep dodo what they actually need to do is consult some one who knows 20% of the stuff. However in todays thrusting world of business that may be death to your career, which is why it doesn't happen. Dave G4UGM Dave G4UGM

That 10% knowledge limit is the reason to have a course which teaches the "so-called" basics. I would not try to use modern hard/software. I'd pick something simple like 1620 and a PDP-8 or PDP-11. It could be set up as an on-line tutorial but having the real hardware under each student's hands would be priceless. A map of the simpler concepts of the functionality of the above hardware could be made to a map of a current system based on computing services provided...this one needs more serious thinking. Those students who get passionate about innards can then go on to learn the modern technology. But all should be aware of locations, addressing (indirect and direct), device instructions and how the bits flow from here to there and arithmetic. /BAH

Single stepping from the console and an understanding of machine code were invaluable debugging tools fifty years ago. Knowledge of COBOL, Fortran or PL/1 was once a ticket to a well paid job. > >For the last two years I have "taught" a course at a UK University on >Windows Systems Administration. You want to teach the students what you learned because it was the basis of _your_ understanding of computers. You show no inclination to teach them about anything that happened before then. I'm sure graduates sixty years ago understood how to use mercury delay lines as computer memory and vacuum tubes as arithmetic units. If they are still alive they probably think that you don't really understand computers. I remember being shocked thirty years ago when a recent graduate asked me why I was looking at a core dump of a COBOL program. I concluded that he was not properly taught but of course he was right and modern tools are a much better way of debugging a program. > >It makes business sense to teach them as little as possible to be >remotely effective. It is your responsibility to equip your students for a job. That must include making them aware that they can't know everything and giving them some tools to recognise what they don't know and how to acquire the knowledge they need.

What universities need to provide is education (what you say) rather than simple 'training' in the lastest flavour. My wife, somewhat frivolously, asks: "Which would you prefer your son or daughter to get at school? Sex education or sex training?" -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)...
