Then you're misreading me *still*. A good grounding in assembler is completely irrelevant, it just happened to be what sold at the time I started out (along with a facility for logic design) - had I started a few years later a good grounding in C and data structures would have been useful without ever having seen assembler, but a good grounding in assembler without those would have made life harder then. Starting today a good grounding in assembler is pretty much completely useless, but a thorough appreciation of OO design is valuable and a real grasp of scaling problems is very valuable. Judging by the things I'm reading though a really good understanding of machine deep learning is what will yield the big bucks over the next decade or so (that's PHD territory though). It makes me feel old to realise that I'll probably have to leave that all to the next generation. So no, what I confirm is that a person with ability who is willing to constantly learn new things can stay up to date and fit in anywhere once they get a toe in, but in order to do so you have to stay up to date and start with a skill that gets you a toe in. Assembler programming is not one such any more and hasn't been for decades. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/
