That 10% knowledge limit is the reason to have a course which teaches the "so-called" basics. I would not try to use modern hard/software. I'd pick something simple like 1620 and a PDP-8 or PDP-11. It could be set up as an on-line tutorial but having the real hardware under each student's hands would be priceless. A map of the simpler concepts of the functionality of the above hardware could be made to a map of a current system based on computing services provided...this one needs more serious thinking. Those students who get passionate about innards can then go on to learn the modern technology. But all should be aware of locations, addressing (indirect and direct), device instructions and how the bits flow from here to there and arithmetic. /BAH
