Perhaps it does. Panopticlick lists mine (Central US) as being 1.78 bits, but I could easily see people being more identifiable if they lived in a less populated zone like Hawaii or Alaska. Of course, none of this has anything to do with the Mac, or the other newsgroups it’s been crossposted to. My Mac is uniquely identifiable, and I’m not going to bother trying to fix it. Simply running a stock Debian install (well, I did have to disable JavaScript with Iceweasel because it breaks the Panopticlick web site) in a virtual machine drops it to 1 in 262K, and I’d be far better served tweaking that to be more common. -- "Also . . . Why does your Panopticlick result indicate 1.78 bits of identifying information, while mine, at the moment, indicates 7.28 bits? $ firefox -url panopticlick.eff.org & = Time Zone 7.28 bits of identifying information = 1 in 154.91 browsers have this value = value 480 I like your results much better.

For exactly the reason I described. Perhaps for other reasons, too. I don’t know if Panopticlick does correlations to determine its bit counts, but I could *easily* see how your trying to hide who you are might actually make you stick out like a sore thumb. As someone else said, the vast majority of the people in your IP block *probably* share the same time zone (likely matching that of your ISP). So if you’re the odd man out who wants to come in with CET-1, there’s potentially a lot more identifying information floating out there than you realize. -- "Also . . . I can kill you with my brain." This is a fair assessment. On the same token, when using the public VPN servers, most, if not all of which allow you to choose a server in any desired country, one should probably consider manually *matching* timezones.

Details do get difficult to master, as the solution set gets more and more comprehensive, so it's undertandable if you haven't been following the details closely. The good news is that we've reduced the entropy for all 8 fingerprinting items reported by panopticlick.eff.org 1. User Agent 2. HTTP_ACCEPT Headers 3. Browser Plugin Details 4. Time Zone 5. Screen Size and Color Depth 6. System Fonts 7. Are Cookies Enabled? 8. Limited supercookie test In addition, I'm now working on encrypting every web page with (without resorting to VPN), even those that are unencrypted; but that's a separate topic from fingerprinting.

Why do you say that? It is true that I am not very concerned with the details, because I think the whole venture is foolish. I'm following the thread for psychiatric reasons only, or, more likely, for literary reasons. Like following a sitcom, for instance. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch)

You don't know the answer, and that's OK. You don't care about the answer, and that's also OK. But, it doesn't make the question, or the attempt at SOLVING the problem set, less valid just because you have no interest in the discussion. (Your comment actually makes YOU the troll, and, me, the feeder of the troll for bothering to explain this to you.) At the moment, the best suggestion is to NOT change the system time zone: WINDOWS: C:\? tzutil.exe /s Japan or Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Advanced>Environment Variables MAC/LINUX: $ TZ='Japan' date && firefox -url panopticlick.eff.org But to change *only* the browser time zone. The problem is the syntax to change *just* the browser time zone. I can't figure out the *syntax* to do that yet. But, if that works, that would solve the problem instantly. Googling, Firefox has related plugins (e.g., FoxClocks), but, they seem to be oriented in a different direction than spoofing the system time zone. https://foxclocks.org/mozilla So, the only thing holding up the solution is the syntax to spoof the time zone that the browser thinks it is in.

There is, the African Swallow is much larger and capable of much greater lifting power. Sadly, they are non-migratory. > http://style.org/unladenswallow/ -- http://2blog.kreme.com

I guess I should have put a smiley in there, to clue you in. :)
