I just updated a friend's late 2012 Mac Mini from 10.8 to 10.9. It has a single Firewire external with 2 partitions, one for an alternate boot/diagnostics volume and one for Time Machine. I ran all the usual diagnostics (DiskWarrior, SMART, etc.) before the upgrade. Everything was fine. Now whenever the machine is booted, both external partitions spontaneously dismount a minute or so after booting is completed, each producing a Finder window saying "Disk not ejected properly. Eject "partition name" before disconnecting or turning it off." Not only are both partitions dismounted, but the physical hard drive does not even appear in Disk Utility so there is no way to remount them. It's as though the external was actually unplugged or had been powered off. I have replugged the Firewire cable and the unit seems to have continuous power. The user has done absolutely nothing to cause this. It happens on a cold boot or after a wake from sleep. We can remount the external by switching it off then on again. The partitions stay mounted until the machine is put to sleep. On awakening, the same dismount and messages occur. So far there doesn't seem to be any directory corruption, but it's got me scared to death my friend's going to lose data. It's a business machine. I have essentially an identical setup--same Mini, same external with 2 partitions--and have never had this problem. Also I haven't heard of the problem. One difference in our setups is that my friend has SuperDuper! set to do automatic backups to a sparseimage on the alternate boot partition twice a week. The latest version of SD! has fixed a "failure to auto-dismount backup volumes". Maybe the SD! fix is dismounting the partitions; but _both_ partitions are dismounting, not just the one holding the target sparseimage. However, this could be a red herring, and SD! could be entirely blameless. Does anyone have any ideas on what's going wrong? Any help greatly appreciated!

Okay, here's a part of the system logs. It starts when the Mini was
awakened at ~11:11 and continues through a restart at ~11:17. The 2
external partitions are disk1s2 'Muninn' and disk2s3 'TimeMachineHD'. I
have marked the lines where the disk mentions occur with '•••'.
I have no idea what all this means, but it seems they are mounting and
then unmounting for no recorded reason with mentions about bad journals.
_No_ unmounting was initiated by the user.
Thanks for your help.

Maybe there's a hardware problem with the drives or cables. I'd take
the whole system to a Genius Bar and see if they can duplicate the
problem on another system with your drive and cable. If not, then it
may be the FW controller on the logic board.
I can't imagine if this is a kernel level bug that others haven't seen
this already. Take it into Apple. Make them get you an espresso while
they work on your system.

No help here...
My first guess would be SuperDuper is screwing up, due to the
scheduled backups. For example, there is stuff like this buried
in the application directory...
/Volumes/SuperDuper\!/SuperDuper\!.app/Contents/Resources/com.shirtpocket.backuponmount-login.plist
...but it's undocumented. So, try disabling the scheduled
backups, then restart the computer. Hopefully SuperDuper
will actually do what it's told.
If the problem persists, look around for a SuperDuper log
(maybe in /Library/Logs) and also take a look at the Apple
System Logs (in var/log, labeled asl) with the appropriate
timestamp. The suffix U0 is the kernel, G80 is the user's
group, U501 is the user (typically). Look at all of them.
My impression is some things logged here don't show up in
the system (syslog generated, I believe) log.
If posted here, please don't let the lines wrap. And, if
anyone wants to include it in a followup, it would be kind
to trim 900+ lines (or whatever..) to just the relevant
entries.
I'm also curious about the drive make, model, and enclosure,
but I doubt this problem is related to any of that.

I would like to know whether SD! is part of the problem. I suppose I could downgrade to the previous version which was running under 10.8, which didn't have this problem. > If the problem persists, look around for a SuperDuper log > (maybe in /Library/Logs) and also take a look at the Apple > System Logs (in var/log, labeled asl) with the appropriate > timestamp. The user sent me the log section in a TextEdit doc with softwrap. When I paste it into Thunderbird to post here, TB insists on 80 character hardwrap. I can't find any pref to change that. Enlightenment welcomed. > I'm also curious about the drive make, model, and enclosure, > but I doubt this problem is related to any of that. Wiebetech ToughTech 2TB with USB@, Firewire, and eSATA. Both the user and I have several of these drives and none has ever caused a problem. So far.

Perhaps, once the drive has been mounted again, it stays mounted.

Yes, I will recheck this. However, the fact that the partitions stay mounted after the external is switched off and on again would seem to indicate that cabling is not the problem. I do apreciate your input though.

Do you really mean 10.9, or is it in fact running 10.9.3? In my experience, early 10.9 versions definitely had problems with external drives spontaneously unmounting. I haven't seen any such problems with Firewire drives since I updated to 10.9.2 (using mostly OWC drives, some bus powered, some with their own power supply), nor with USB drives in 10.9.3. I've seen some reports of ongoing problems with USB 3.0 and eSATA drives spontaneously unmounting in 10.9.3 (when the drive is idle for a while, or the computer wakes from sleep). As an experiment, you could try disabling the Energy Saver preference to put drives to sleep when possible. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

The Mini was upgraded last Friday from 10.8.<current> directly to 10.9.3 via Software Update. No intermediate updates needed or applied. > In my experience, early 10.9 versions definitely had problems with > external drives spontaneously unmounting. Yes, I've seen some of those reports as well. This connection is via Firewire, but I have seen vague reports of FW dismounts as well. > As an experiment, you could try disabling the Energy Saver preference to > put drives to sleep when possible. Yes, I'll have to check. I keep this turned on on my setup, but usually turn it off on commercial users's setup. My setup and the user's setup is so very similar, that I'm drawn back to billy@MIX.COM's comments about SuperDuper! My installation is so very similar to the user, except I don't have automatic backups scheduled on my machine, and I have no problems. Thanks, David, and all the rest who have replied. I've got a lot to check out. I'll get back to you all as soon as I have more info.
