#53216 — Using OSX Mavericks Server as personal iCloud for device synchronization

Message-ID<19578003-710b-453d-88b4-1946b86fc824@googlegroups.com>
Hello,

further to the realization that MacOSX Mavericks didn't let me synchronize my iPad's Contacts and Calendar contents with my Mac anymore, I decided to purchase Mavericks Server. After several unsuccessful attempts to retrieve an Apple Push Certificate with a self-signed server certificate, I have come to the temporary conclusion that I need to fork out $150 to purchase a certificate from a third-party. Have other people in this group come to the same conclusion?

Is there a simpler way to back up your i-devices' data than using Mavericks Server?

Many thanks.

P.

It is hard to know what you want.

I sync my iPhone and iPad and Mac contacts using iCloud.

I sync my iPhone and iPad and Mac calendar using Google.

(I could do both with iCloud, or both with Google.)

Both work fine with Mavericks, iOS6,iOS7, Mountain Lion, etc. Both
are free (in the sense of costing me no money and in the sense of not
exposing me to ads).

No need to spend any money on Mavericks Server or certificates that I
can see, but maybe you have special needs of some kind. Are you
unwilling to connect any of your devices to the internet for example?

I haven't got around to upgrading my server beyond 10.6.8 yet, and
haven't looked into this.

I saw a long article on Ars Technica today about Mavericks Server. I've
only read the first page (of 10) so far but it mentions the push server
certificate mechanism, and says that it requires an institutional Apple
ID (not a regular personal one used for iTunes/App Store, nor a
developer ID), with which you can get a free push certificate supplied
by Apple.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/12/a-power-users-guide-to-os-x-server-mavericks-edition/

More research is needed to find out where to go to get one of these
Apple IDs and whether there are additional requirements such as needing
to be a company rather than an individual.

You can back up your iDevices using iTunes in Mavericks, as before. You
just can't sync contacts and calendars directly, because Mavericks
dropped the Sync Services framework.

I'm using iCloud for contact and calendar sync, and have been for many
years (via MobileMe prior to the existence of iCloud).

I will likely not upgrade from the last real server version since I have
an Xserve. Instead, I will manually move to the open source versions of
apache, postfix etc which I can then upgrade for a long time.

That is how the push notification was done. It was meant for a few very
large service providers (think hotmail, gmail etc) to have those
accounts and they have one link into the Apple notification server to
sed notifications to their many users.

It was not meant for every smtp server in the nation to have a
connection to it. For Blackberry, they expect every company to buy/rent
the enterprise emila software that interfaces between the corporate SMTP
serviuce and the blackberry proprietary service.

When Apple was in the server business, it did not provide that push
notification to OS-X (although it did have the standard push
notification software on OS-X server, it did not interface with the IOS
push notification services).

If Apple has bothered to add its own proprietary push notification to
Mavericks at a time where its idea of "server" is the home server, it
would imply that they will modify their policies on connections to their
central push notification server to open it to "mass market" as opposed
to a few select services.

So now the Mavericks users are stuck using a 3rd-party solution to sync
everything to their machines directly? I think this is what the OP
wants but can't have.

I don't use iCloud for contacts and calendar and just use Google's
stuff. It works on my phone, Linux box, and Mac.

Third party to what?

I see two parties here. One is me, and the other is either iCloud or
Google.

Yes, Google is fine. iCloud is too, but only if you are all Mac OS's.

Not true, iCloud works fine in a mixed environment. I know plenty of
people who us it to sync their macs and ios devices, but also sync to
google as well. Works just fine.

Can you expand on what you mean by using iCloud in a mixed
environment? I haven't had that experience, but I haven't tried
either.

I haven't been able to connect my Linux box to iCloud. AFAIK, it only
works on MacOS clients. Meanwhile, Google Drive and Dropbox have Linux
clients that "just work". And I can sync my Google bookmarks, calendar,
and contacts with Linux.

That is as I would expect, which still leaves me wondering what Lewis
meant when he wrote iCloud works fine in a mixed environment.

Mixed iOS / OSX, sure. Also seems OK. Perhaps iCloud has a windows client
and that is what he meant?

Mixed between iCloud and Google. And if you can sync to Google, you
should be able to sync to most things.

That's confusing since you contradicted my statement that iCloud is
only fine if you are only using Apple operating systems. Oh - I look
back and I see I wrote "Mac OS's" where I meant Apple OS's. Maybe
that is the confusion.

I agree that you can use both iCloud and Google (I do the same thing).
But the only reason I can use iCloud at all is that the devices that
use it are all runing iOS or some (relatively recent) version of OSX.

Google is not an Apple operating system.

You said iCloud was only fine if you were "all Mac OSes", but iCloud
syncs just fine to the non-Apple/non-Mac Google.

Can you explain what you mean by that?

I think iCloud syncs to (for example) my contacts. And I can also
sync my contacts to Google. Is that what you mean?

Or are you talking about Google's Chrome OS, or some direct way to
sync iCloud to Google?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to understand
what you mean by "iCloud syncs to Google."

It still seems like not a mixed environment. iCloud is for Apple
devices. Possibly there is some way to get iCloud to also sync with
contact and calendar on Gmail? Possibly one can then get Gmail to
sync with non-Apple devices?

I still would not call that using iCloud in a mixed environment. But
again, I remain unsure about what you mean.

Yes, iCloud syncs to Google.

If you have a Google account in Contacts (OS X), for example, there will be a
check-box in the setting to sync the iCloud contacts to the Google
account. This is how my mother keeps her iCloud contacts synced with
Google.

I see. This isn't really what I would mean by a "iCloud works in a
mixed environment" but I do understand what you are saying now.

A mixed environment to me is non-MacOS boxes like a Windows 7 and Linux
box connecting to iCloud. AFAIK, that's not possible. They can,
however, connect to Google and get contacts and calendar info.

Outlook 2007 or later on Windows can sync mail, contacts and calendars
with iCloud, if you install Apple's iCloud Control Panel for Windows.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1455

Linux is not supported, except via a roundabout method (such as syncing
with Google, which is then synced with a Mac or Windows machine which
also syncs with iCloud).
