One of us is not understanding the other. The server sorts mail for username+XXX into folder XXX. Then you want a rule on the client to move it to folder YYY. Why did you need it in XXX in the first place? > eventually it can be archived, but that can happen at some future point > when the email is no longer relevant. If it's only done "eventually", it's not relevant to this discussion, which is about whether the mail client automatically runs rules when downloading new messages in folders. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

My Rules run automatically on every message that comes into Mail because I don't use Postfix to presort mail into other folders. If I rebuild an index or folder, then I have to run Rules again on that folder. Mail comes into my system via the Inbox. It's not presorted as you do on your server. I think that's the problem. Postfix and Mail's Rules don't go together. By design, Apple assumed that email would enter into the Mail program via the Inbox, either by POP or IMAP. I don't think they considered Postfix doing presorting. I haven't used Sparrow, mostly because it only does IMAP. Apparently, it does very well with Google's Preferred Folder feature that does postfix like presorting of mail. I don't know what happens if a bunch of mail comes in as unread, is sorted into various folders, and you read it with Apple Mail. I just use the Web interface for Gmail. Sparrow would probably flag folders as having unread mail. I don't know if implementing Postfix to sort your Inbox on the Mac AND using Rules would give you the same features as Sparrow Mail and Gmail. If Apple Mail was build to only automatically process Rules on Inbox, I think that makes your use of it an outlier. And that means you won't like Apple Mail and think it's broken. It's not broken, IMO. You're just using Mail differently than what Apple envisioned. Sounds like you need to write your own or take up Sparrow, if Google releases it to open source. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... POP is all I use and all I need at home for 5 mail accounts. Once the
mail is popped it (and attachments) are on my computer. The server copy
is deleted the next day (ISP). Gmail mail persists there. The local
copies I backup once per year to DVD and then clear the prior year from
my system.
If I lose an e-mail and it's important enough - they'll write back or I
can ask for it again. Hasn't happened at all in recent years other than
one sent by my neighbor recently.
Don't need no stinkin' IMAP.

There is no benefit of IMAP that will improve my home computer
use/e-mail needs.

I do. I can read my e-mail on iPhone when needed and it's still
available on my Mac - and v-v. I can always access my ISP e-mail via
its webmail (rarely) and gmail (more often). Were I to use my Apple
mail account actively it would be available too.
I always have the option of leaving my ISP based e-mail for longer than
the current 24 hours (after an Apple Mail POP) as well - but don't have
a need for it at present.
Work is different of course - but for home use POP is all I need.

That's trivial to do with POP3, though. -- All usenet users are quirky, but some are more quirky than others.

To me it's the difference between "work" e-mail where we want everything
available and we delete very little (IMAP land) and "home" e-mail where
we delete a lot and once we got the memo - that's it (POP land).
Don't need no stinkin IMAP at home.

...this is what I'm doing, too. I can (and, do) have several user agents,
and everything goes where I want it to be on all of them. I can fire up a
new one, and everything will go where it's supposed to be, too.
Junk filtering is also done in front of my server, as I've had the same email
address since before spam existed, and it makes no sense load it with 125,000+
useless letters a week. I used Postini for a while, but it costs more than
an Iron Port box (US$300/month adds up quickly), and then Google bought it,
which knocks the level of trust down, for me, anyway. Plus, as is all too
typical, Google is now shit canning it - as of last November they are not
renewing any contracts (and want users to move to Google Apps, har). Apple
uses Proofpoint, at least on their mailing lists. Both of these work well,
and far better than I think any user agent can on its own. That is, they
get plenty of external input (from honeypots, rolling blacklists, etc), as
opposed to the end users having to 'train' a filter by slogging through all
the junk themselves.

I use filters and they work fine. Most are pretty simple, but a few
have longer rule chains and no problems.
