There will always be people who, for the best of reasons, like to get
there the hard way.

I used to rant and rave about how I hated the Dock, and I used
DragThing instead. I haven't learned to love the Dock, but I'm
accustomed to it now and I've stopped ranting about it.

That depends on just how "the hard way" is defined. Is it accuracy or
is it speed. Friends of mine and I have compared "my way" versus the
"traditional way" where applications are launched from the dock, and it
has been just as likely for me to complete the launch first as it is
for them.

Spotlight is hardly "The hard way". If your hands are already on the
keyboard, it's almost always faster to launch an app with Spotlight,
than to move your hand to the mouse/trackpad and move the pointer to its
Dock icon.

OTOH I have always quite liked the Dock. I will qualify that by saying
that I never used any Apple products before OS X.

Except that I use Launchbar, the same here. Anything in the dock is a
running app.

Like you I organize my dock with the apps I launch or keep running most
often. (IOW: the cruft that OS X sets up with is gone). From there I
group them by sets. The 5 or so apps that are always on are on the
left, the apps I use most are next grouped by 'kind' (the three MS
Office apps are together for example), then to the right those I use
least (utilities). Within those sets I mix them so colors and shapes
are different from icon to icon.

I have 22 icons there + trash. On a 24" screen that means they are
sized to be pretty large and so are easy to distinguish from one another
even when some are quite similar at a quick glance (Thunderbird and
Google Earth for example are separated by Skype; iTunes lies far enough
away from Google Earth to not be confused, etc.).

The pale blue dot for running apps is inadequate. A more solid blue bar
under the app or even a bright blue background would be better.

(Or how about backgrounds:
       clear: not launched
  pale green: launching
       green: running, okay
blue: shutting down (some (all?) apps show a 'shutting down'
                             black bar through the icon)
red: hung up - then triple click that to open activity monitor.)

Oops, where did simplicity go...?

Thankfully, Mountain Lion apparently allows the user to turn this off.

Perhaps it should auto-lock until you specifically tell it to start
auto-saving, or auto-save should be an option you specifically select
when you start working on something. Maybe. It's rough to have to
design a one-size-fits-all function like that.

For those who were using the PPC cruft, that's not an improvement. Not
all software gets upgraded, often because the company involved no longer
exists.

What if you're not going to mess with a file? What if you're only going
to have a quick final read through before you fire it off to the
printing company? And when closing the document before sending it off,
it automatically saves, without telling you, the paragraph deletion
that you didn't realize you did?

A lot of good restoring a previous version does after you get your
thousand copies back from the printer.

I still want to be prompted of *any* changes before a doc is saved.

Lock the document. Then it won't save any changes because it won't let
you make any changes (without either explicitly unlocking or
duplicating).
>

Which is why I think docs should get locked automatically a lot sooner
than two weeks - even one day or possibly even every time you open a
file. If it were every time you open a file, you'd never be able to
edit any file until you explicitly said "okay" once. I could live with
that, but I suspect it would annoy a lot of people. It would save some
subset of them (those of us who do care about files not being changed
unexpectedly), but it would probably annoy more.

Ridiculous. Any doc I want to open for viewing only, must be locked
manually first, to prevent any accidental changes from being autosaved
without my knowledge.

The original way was far superior, where I always knew what was going on
at all times, and which has been largely restored in Mountain Lion;
thank god. Except for Save As, which despite its heralded return, is
broken.

So, Apple rolls out a new paradigm to protect people from forgetting to
save, and the result is they mustn't forget to lock to protect
themselves from unwanted saves.

Apple has rolled out a feature that benefits your average user who is
writing school papers in Pages, or updating budget numbers in Numbers.
For them, autosave is great.

If you are editing httpd.conf in Textedit, then you are *not* the
general average user who they made this feature for.

Even for them it can be a b!tch. Accidental changes are auto saved
without notice. That's the thing about accidental changes; they're
accidents, and you often don't notice them. You won't know to go back in
the versions to undo the mistake, if you didn't know the mistake was
made in the first place. Up until Lion, the dot in the red gumdrop told
you if a document had been changed and unsaved - an immediate indicator
of an accidental edit. If you didn't see the dot, you get an additional
warning by way of the "do you want to save changes" dialog that pops
up when you try to close what you thought was an unedited doc.

Both of those things go away in Lion.

Be honest. In 10.6 and earlier, how many times had you closed a doc that
you swore you had only opened to read and not edit, only to be prompted
with the "Do you want to save changes" message? It's happened to me many
times, and the message allowed me to answer "no" to discard the
inadvertent changes.

Lion's auto save did away with those protections against accidental
edits, and it was a major reason why 10.7 was the only OS X version that
I ever skipped.

It happens regularly here.

I also create new documents on a regular basis that I use as a scratchpad
and want to throw away once done. The "Do you want to save?" message is
a useful reminder to review and, usually but not always, discard those.

When I open TextEdit one of the files that is open is an 'unsaved'
document that I've been using for over a year as a scratchpad. It's
always there and it has whatever the last thing I was working on, which
is sometimes a useful reminder. I continue to dump new things into it
and sometime I delete old things, but it's the same untitled document. I
never save it *because I don't have to*.

And the trade off is that you never lose data. My point is that is a

Didn't you understand my post? Unless you are aware of having made the
mistake, you DO lose data. Sure the proper data is back in the versions
somewhere, but how would one know to go looking there for the proper
version, if one doesn't know a mistake was made?

In any case, it's a moot point now, and a point that Apple understands,
because they've returned as an option the prompt to save changes in
10.8.

That would be great if it were really the case. And I say this as
someone who *likes* autosave and versions and wants them to be great
rather than just an early and incomplete release.

You *can* and *do* lose data. (a) a changed file is, by definition,
the loss of the previous state of the file - lost data; (b) being able
to recover the file by going out of your way through Versions is not
the same as not losing the data in the first place. Data lost which
you have to go looking for to re-find is not the same as data that
wasn't lost in the first place; (c) unless you are paying careful
attention, you may not even know that you've lost the data so you won't
know to go looking for it again; (d) have you looked through a versions
history? It's just not always that easy, especially with a large
document, to find just the one you were looking for; and perhaps worst
of all (e) if you move the file to another filesystem, you lose the
entire versions history.

(e) may be the worst of all because if you lose the versions history,
even if you noticed the changes and wanted to dig up the version you
really meant to keep, it may not be there anymore. Honest-to-goodness
data loss, rather than just "recoverable" data loss.

I strongly believe the solution is much more aggressive file locking.

Mountain Lion's (optional) solution is at least a vast improvement over
Lion - even though the default setting is, in my opinion, the wrong
one. At least now, Mountain Lion offers users a checkbox in
Preferences->General to "Ask to keep changes when closing documents".
That should *always* be the default and allow people to uncheck it if
they like, but at least the option is available now. Like turning on
always-visible scrollbars, checking this box will be one of the things
I do immediately upon setting up a new account or machine now.
