If the document is in a "regionally compressed" or uncompressed format, then changes in a small area of the graphics file may not require much space in the Versions database. Large scale changes in graphics files could occupy a lot of space. (Versions will reduce its space usage over time, as it prunes old versions on a similar basis to Time Machine pruning old backups down to one per hour, day, or week.) -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I haven't used a version of GraphicConverter which is new enough to support autosave and versions, so I can't answer that. I haven't used Pixelmator for anything serious since I upgraded to Lion, but can do a quick test. I don't have any 100 MB images handy to test with Pixelmator, but I do have some photos (JPEG) which are in the order of 5 MB. > > Large scale changes in graphics files could occupy a lot of space. > > "Could"? Have you tested this? Given the chunking model used by Versions, it is reasonable to assume that changes to graphics files will occupy a significant amount of space in the Versions database, if the changes affect a significant portion of the pixel data in the file. Most common edits are likely to fall into this category (e.g. colour corrections, cropping). I opened a 5 MB JPEG in Pixelmator. It opened as an untitled document in Pixelmator's native format. When saved, the Pixelmator document was about 72 MB. (Pixelmator supports Photoshop-like features such as layers, and I expect its native format has the image in a lossless compression format or uncompressed.) Doing several edits (drawing random brush strokes on top of a photo, replacing the whole thing with a gradient fill, reverting to the original photo, doing some colour adjustments), my /.DocumentRevisions-V100 folder ballooned from 24 MB to 281 MB. (The 24 MB would have included all edits I had previously done in Pages, TextEdit, etc. since I upgraded to Lion back in May, minus any that have been automatically culled by the ageing algorithm.) At this point, the Versions view showed the current document and five entries in the timeline (the last one being the time I last saved the document, so that may only count as four versions in the database). One of the images in the versions database (the gradient fill) is very simple and only requires 25 MB when saved. That adds up to about 72*3+25=241 MB of identifiable data assuming the entire file was saved in the versions database each time, therefore there is either some additional overhead or the last saved state is also there and some space was able to be saved by chunking in the edit where I drew over the image. I then did another simple edit: added an empty layer and then deleted it again. The Versions database is now 352 MB, and the version history grew by one entry. The increase (111 MB) suggests the data being written into the versions database is larger than the file size. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

It would be *wrong* though. iPhoto is completely irrelevant to any discussion of Versions, since it doesn't use that mechanism. I wouldn't think it was reasonable to assume that about iPhoto, since iPhoto has no way to browse through earlier edits and pick one. Its only "revision" handling is undo of recent edits in the current session, or revert to original. The only images retained by iPhoto on disk are the original and latest edited version (plus thumbnails). Versions stores chaged chunks of files in its database, so it is reasonable to assume that a change affecting most of an image will require most of the image to be stored in the database again, if the document happens to be captured by Versions at that point in time (either due to an explicit "Save a Version", or a timed save, or whatever). Judging from some analysis done by other people (see below), Versions appears to be using a new file system feature in Lion which allows unchanged portions of files to be shared between multiple versions, only needing to store the changed chunks and constructing a full file by assembling chunks from various places. (Somewhat like hard links, but operating on portions of files rather than entire files.) Versions has a pruning mechanism similar to Time Machine (keeping fewer old versions than recent ones), and this operates without the involvement of the application. Because of these implementation details, it is not possible for an application to store proprietary delta change information (such as a sequence of commands) in the version database: the actual data in the file must be saved each time, but the chunking mechanism allows only the changed portions to occupy disk space (plus some overhead). Given the way that Pages (for example) stores its documents as a zipped folder, I expect that Versions is smart enough to expand that and only save the chunks of the contained files which have changed. From my own observations of the database, Versions may use different methods to store the chunks depending on the file type, perhaps only using the "entire file" model described above in the fallback case. Apple doesn't document anything about how Versions works, but others have done some behind the scenes analysis. Here is Apple's document summarising Versions from the user's point of view: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4753 Ars Technica had some useful background in their Lion review: <http://arstechnica.com/apple/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7/14/#versioning-inter nals> This article delves deeper into the internals of the Versions database, and links to others which may be useful: <http://tekonomist.wordpress.com/2011/08/06/mac-os-x-lion-file-versions- part-2/> > > The increase (111 MB) suggests the data being written into > > the versions database is larger than the file size. > > Well, that at least is some real information. Glad to be of service. A further update: since yesterday, my DocumentRevisions-V100 folder is down to 280 MB again but the Versions view still shows six versions of the document. It must have done some housekeeping. It appears to not be automatically deleting versions I'd explicitly saved. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Cropping even one pixel on left or top probably pretty much screws up chunking. Time Machine (TM) does not use chunking. If the file has changed, TM
saves a complete copy of the entire new file. If it has not changed, TM
makes a hardlink to the earlier version.
Chunking is a good way to save space, but it probably doesn't work with
images.

Me too. I've kept the default Lion version of mail on one of my computers just so I could try to figure out if I might get to like it better. I haven't. There is a minor annoyance of mail that continues to bother me. Many of my correspondents have varied "from" addresses, but there is a string that occurs in all of them (e.g. their last name). I'd like to be able to search for all email with "schwarzkopf" contained in the from field. I can do this of course, using a smart mailbox, but I'd like to be able to do it from the search field of Mail as I used to be able to.

Hmm. If I put From:lewis in Mail I see all the message from anyone named
Lewis, including all of mine and all from Peter Lewis. Scanning through
2768 messages found I don't see any where Lewis is not in the From
header.
I though I found some from "Derrick" but it turned out his email address
was @lewis{something}.com
I would think searching for "person" in the from field is going to hit a
*ton* of unintended mail.
