#117615 — Wake from sleep takes 30 - 40 s. since 10.13.6 update.

FromAlan Browne <bitbucket@blackhole.com>

SubjectWake from sleep takes 30 - 40 s. since 10.13.6 update.
Message-ID<HeGdnTf7R5dNcvXGnZ2dnUU7-cHNnZ2d@giganews.com>
I updated this iMac to 10.13.6 over a week ago.

Since then, when I hit the keyboard or trackpad to wake it, it takes 30
- 40 s. to get to the login screen (otherwise black).

External drives do power up immediately on hitting the keyboard or trackpad.

Before this update, wake from sleep was anywhere from instant-ish to 5 -
10 s. in the worst case.

The MBA's at work, updated, are still waking quickly.

Agreed, though in my case it's only 5-10 seconds ... which does seems an
age, compared to everything before.

My iMac wake-up time went from pretty much instant to 5-6 seconds.

Just for kicks, I would try resetting the SMC and PRAM:

<https://support.apple.com/HT201295>
<https://support.apple.com/HT204063>

FWIW, I have no such issue on my 2013 Mac Pro or 2011 MacBook Pro in
daily use here at home, and I haven't (yet?) heard complaints from
anyone else I know running 10.13.6 (other than the couple of reports in
this thread). Who knows how widespread this is...

I see it too. It tends to be longer when it has slept for a long time,
like in the morning.

Are your Macs using a hard drive or Fusion drive?

It might be the ridiculous new anti-malware system Apple seems to have
added to 10.13.6 (and the Mojave beta). I don't use Sleep, but there's
an idiotic new process called 'YaraScanService' which is extremely
annoying and definitely slows down the computer every time I reboot and
for the next hour or two while it rescans files it already scanned
before. It eats up disk usage, RAM, CPU time, etc., and although it
does lessen its usage when the cmputer is "busy", it does still slow it
down.

It is of course much faster when scanning an SSD, so should be less
noticeable on those Macs.

Yes, it is a late 2012 iMac with Fusion drive.

I don't have that process running and Spotlight can't find anything with
that name. It guess it must be some third party software you got
installed.

Nope. It comes from Apple's update. There are various messages on
Apple's forums and elsewhere about it.

The problem is that it runs after booting and then self-quits after a
hour or two, so those who use Sleep or check a whileafter booting don't
see the process. The actual software for it is buried inside Apple's
MRT anti-malware so Spotlight won't see that either.

It only started with the 10.13.6 update and is a complete pain in the
backside. :-(

It may or may not only be scanning the Downloads folder, but I haven't
yet had the time to clean that out to test that theory.

That's not a "problem".

No problems with it here on multiple Macs.

There is no such process on either of my machines under Mojave.

My 2012 iMac takes about 8-10 seconds to wake from sleep while my 2015
MBP takes less than 2 seconds (both under Mojave). I didn't notice it
being any slower under 10.13, but it's been a couple of weeks since I
booted into 10.13/

# mdfind -name YaraScanService
#

So, no such file anywhere on my system.

Nope.

Good idea. It's been so long since I've needed those that I didn't
think of all of them. This weekend, I guess.

Thx.

Nor do I on the MBA's at work. I haven't updated the other MBA here.

No effect. Mac took nearly a minute from time I hit the keypad
(external drives came on immediately) to the login screen.

I think my next diagnostic step would be to run another test, where I
let the machine sleep for a good amount of time to make sure all
activity has stopped for a length of time, then make note of the precise
time I try to wake the machine, let it wake up, then look at the system
log (both the system.log file and the command-line "log show" facility).

Note that you must execute "log show" with sudo, and you can limit the
time range of log messages with the log show --start and --end
command-line switches to the time span of interest (from a few minutes
before you woke the machine to a minute or two later), like this:

sudo log show --start "2018-08-12 11:05:00" --end "2018-08-12 11:10:00"

I'll give it a shot. The sleep period is long ... from about 23:00 ..
07:00 or so ... though I'll sleep in tomorrow I think ...

Using that sort of command will make it easier to narrow it down, I'm
sure.

Given other comments wrt new security features implemented in 13.6, it's
not a given that anything at all will be in the log, however.

But first I'll try this tomorrow:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8494963
QUOTE
There are a fair number of people experiencing this "display
slow to wake from sleep" issue after the macOS 10.13.6 update.
One thing that others have discovered is to use the Power Button
to wake from sleep instead of the wireless keyboard, mouse or
trackpad. When you use the power button to wake from sleep, the
display wakes normally. See if this works for you. Apple is
aware of this issue which started with macOS 10.13.6.

That worked. Came from sleep to login instantly.

Very interesting. I take it your keyboard/mouse/trackpad are wireless?

Thanks for reporting back.

Nope. The keyboard is wired. Trackpad (is of course) wireless.

Works for me too (pressing power button).

I had been going to try the PRAM reset that JR suggested, if nothing
less drastic appeared -- but it has, and it works: great.

Just fyi: My keyboard and mouse are both wireless. I have a USB
'junction box' plugged in ... I had been going to try disconnecting that
before the PRAM reset - but again: no need.
