#72120 — Macbook Air - battery replacement - the answer :)

SubjectMacbook Air - battery replacement - the answer :)
Message-ID<MPG.2f7e48fafd8a852e989891@news.individual.net>
Posted to two groups - hoping the etiquette is correct :)

Booked a Genius Bar (this is in UK) appointment - and yes they were able
to replace the battery while I waited - granted I had to pop to a cafe
for 45 minutes but no hardship.

£99 incl VAT but really good service.

Hopefully this info will get onto the internet somewhere - would be
useful if Apple would actually state this on their website when
describing the options around replacement batteries.

Me, to. Now, add the solution to the end of the threads you started
in both newsgroups, please, Jeremy. It's Usenet politeness.
 Thanks,

Good lord - I don't believe I have ever been pulled-up on usenet for
lack of politeness - it's almost my middle name. Mind you it may just be
relative to some of the NGs I frequent...

I *did* ask nicely. I wasn't upbraiding you, I was just hoping you
would be prompted to kill the other threads so everyone following them
would know the issue was resolved.
It's the USENet way of doing things.
And you did, so thank you and {{{Hugs}}}.
Apologies if I came over as demanding or rough. That was *far* from
my intent because you *are* one of the good guys.
You're more polite than I am at times.
                                       J.

The Genius Bar didn't replace anything since they aren't a repair tech
centre. They simply handed it over to the in-store repair techs, which
you could have done yourself and saved wasting a Genius Bar booking
slot.

Please. The point is Apple replaced the battery on site. You made it
sound like they wouldn't do it on site because they "aren't a tech
center" and because MacBooks are difficult to open. You even said even a
repair center likely wouldn't do it while he waited. The fact is he made
a Genius Bar appointment and had the battery replaced while he waited.
You were wrong.

At the Apple store here to get any tech service you have to first have a
Genius Bar appointment. They hand it off to the hardware guys if needed.

The person that I saw at the Genius Bar for my screen repair said that
they also do the repair work so said there was a good chance that it
would be them doing the repairs as they were on shift in that role later
that night. If you can explain how to book directly with a tech in the
UK then I'm sure there are many of us that would like to know the
process.

My Macbook Pro seems to be one of those with the graphics card issue so
I'd like to take it back at some point and not having to see a Genius
would certainly make the process a bit smoother.

No doubt some of the Genius Bar staff are *also* qualified repair
techs, but most are not.

The point was that the Genius Bar is not meant to be a tech repair
centre. Repairs are taken out the back to be done by qualified repair
staff.

You book the Genius Bar because you get a one-on-one consultation to
help solve an *unknown* problem.

The repair staff are not bookable because you drop off your broken
computer to be repaired when it can be (due to priorities, part
availability, etc.).

If you know your laptop needs a new battery, screen, etc., then there
no point wasting a Genius Bar timeslot. Simply take it straight to the
repair department.

From https://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ headline text in big font right in front of your face:

"The best place to get support for Apple products. When you need a hardware repair, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar. For software or services, get help even faster by phone or chat."

Perhaps you ought to get in touch with Apple to explain that their website is in fact wrong, and that the genius bar is not the right place to go for hardware repair.

So the relevant factor is what colour T-shirt they are wearing at the
time of the repair?

My point is that as far as Apple is concerned, the Genuis Bar is to be
portrayed as your one stop shop for EVERY problem. That's a good
marketing message, it's simple and clear.

Sure there are different people in reality with different roles and
titles that assist. I'd say the Genius Bar replaced the iPad 3 I'd
brought back from the states, however in reality the fact it was an
import caused a bit of an issue and about 4 staff ended up looking at it
in order to authorise it. By that point I imagine one of them may have
had a title like "Apple Store General Manager" but I'd still say the
Genuis Bar replaced it, not that the manager did. When your primary
contact is one department, you attribute the actions to them. That
seems quite normal.

Is there a code to those t-shirts or is it just "tomorrow is a purple
day, all wear your purple shirts"?

I always thought red color was because of Christmas back in the end of
last year, but I saw them still wearing red color in late Feb(rurary) 2015.

I should get out more. I grasped your cultural reference instantly.
Though I did wonder which of their rivals would resort to wiping out
the Apple Security Guys.
Wiping out The Guard always seemed like a futile exercise. There are
always millions and millions of replacements waiting to be zapped, so
why bother? Why not just give them a few dollars to buy a round of
beers?

The "relevant factor" is that the Genius Bar does not have the tools
nor usually the qualifications to do tech repairs. They pass on all
repairs to the department (or at smaller stores send them to a bigger
store's repair department).

Is it *really* so difficult to understand that there are separate
departments for specific tasks?!? Almost every business on the planet
has them, as do "department" stores. :-\

"Problem", yes.
Repair, no.

If you don't know the problem is actually a fault that needs repairing
(rather than, for example, an errant software setting or you simply not
knowing how to do something), then you book a Genius Bar appointment.
If it turns out the problem is a fault that needs repair, then they
pass the machine on to the repair techs. - the Genius Bar does NOT open
up computers and repair them.

If you know the machine needs a physical tech repair, then you take it
to the repair department directly, rather than wasting a Genius Bar
timeslot. It aint exactly interstellar rocket science. :-\
