I did not allege anything. I simply responded to some dude stating that
Apple didn't make software available for older machines. I said it was
perfectly normal.

I did not pass judgement on whether Apple supports machines longer than
the rest of industry. (which it generally does).

If I state that Apple stops providing new software old older machines, I
get called a troll.

Yet, you can state the very same thing and not get called a troll.

You can't technically run Yosemite on 2006 Mac Pros, but there are ways
to do so, thanks to some dedicated Mac "hackers." And you need a new
video card. But it works, and it works well. You can run Yosemite on
pretty much any Core 2 Duo (still a workhorse in Mac _and_ Windows).
32-bit machines have been "abandoned" for sure, but so they should be, I
guess.

Whether Apple supports machines longer than the rest of the industry is
irrelevant; what is relevant is your canard that Apple doesn't support
older hardware in order to sell more hardware. That allegation fails
because Apple does support older hardware.

Because Apple does provide new software for for older machines.

So, I support Apple, and you guys still manage to twist this in my
ranting against Apple.

Again, allegation was made to critizise Apple for not supporting older
hardware. I responded in support of Apple.

I did not state that Apple did not support older hardware. Only that it
si normal for a company whose business model is selling hardware to stop
providing software upgrades to older hardware. I did not define "how
old" older meant.

And yes, Apple has tended to support hardware for longer time than
others, but it does eventually stop supporting them with new software
releases.

I guess it becomes a new challenge: find a way to make a post that you
and your husbands Jully and Lewis cannot find any way to turn to paint
me as a troll. If even a post supportive of Apple gets twisted as a rant
against Apple is twisted 180° by your ilk, it is a tough challenge.

You haven't supported Apple with the overwhelming majority of your posts
here as far as I can see.

In this case, when the OP suggested that Apple chooses not to supply
kernel updates rather than allowing older hardware and software to work
correctly, and asked why, you responded that Apple does so to make
money, because Apple doesn't want sales to go down.

> Again, allegation was made to critizise Apple for not supporting older

Nope. You did support the OP in their incorrect assertions that Apple
has motive to make older hardware obsolete though.

> I did not state that Apple did not support older hardware.

By answering the question in the way you did, that's exactly what you
did - just not in those words.

Nobody but you is debating that.

Because it's not *why* "Apple doesn't continually update the kernel
instead of outdating hardware and software", which is the question you
supposedly answered with your trollish "to make money" comment.

Not to mention you ignored the fact that Apple *does* continually update
the kernel, along with other parts of the operating system to keep older
hardware fresh with new functionality it would otherwise not have.

I'll just add to the comments here..

I really cannot fathom how you came to this line of 'reasoning'. I had a 2006
Mac Pro 'cheese grater' and until Mavericks it was able to run everything I
threw at it. And honestly the only reason I ended up having it recycled was
because it - after running 24x7x365x 7 YEARS it was starting to have overheat
problems. Otherwise I'd probably still be using it instead of the 2012 model I
bought in early 2013. My wife has a 2010 macbook that is running Mavericks now
and I'll be upgrading to Yosemite soon.

Apple has done an excellent job of keeping their OS up-to-date and working with
their hardware.

How often did you remove dust from the inside of it? Did you also remove
dust from the components, like the video card, processor heat sink, and
RAM? I do this twice a year with my Mac Pro and it hums right along,
with no overheating issues at all. If you allow dust to accumulate, then
air flow is impeded by dust, and the machine runs hotter with the fans
spinning faster, which is natural and expected.

I find one or two times a year is all that is needed for me. I take mine
out to the patio with a dust rage, a screw driver, and a can of
compressed air, and give it a good dusting. It's mostly silent and cool
(as cool as a Mac Pro tower can be, anyway) most of the time.

> Otherwise I'd probably still be using it instead of the 2012 model I
> bought in early 2013.

Be sure to keep it as dust-free as you can, within reason.

I've had occasional issues with Yosemite, but not a lot more than other
more buggy releases in the past. People seem to love to forget problems
they have encountered in the past and claim things must be much worse or
in decline - selective memory.

I admit a bit of dust in the eye has caused an outrageous reaction from
time to time. : )

I once used one of those compressed air dusters to blow the dust bunnies
out of an old machine. That session ended in rage. Apparently, either
the can, the nozzle, or the contents (no telling which at the time, and
since it was years ago...) built up an ungodly static charge. Two quick
<SNAP!>s in succession, and I no longer needed to clean the machine - it
was dead as the proverbial doorknob.

The moral of the story: I, for one, wouldn't use "canned air" to clean
*ANYTHING* electronic if you tried to pay me to.

Oh yea.. did all of that. I think the area where I had it by my desk simply
wasn't ventilated enough and over time it took a toll on the tower. It made for
a good excuse to upgrade at least.. ;)

I'm certainly doing that now.. and better ventilated too.

Y'know the 'bumpiest' update for me was going from 10.4 to 10.5 - since then
I've always just waited for a x.x.1 release and then I upgrade. Maybe I'm just
being silly and superstitious but I figure that gives Apple time to clean out
any 'major' hiccups.

Nah, that's a great balance, and is exactly what I tend to do. I don't
normally install the latest release on the machines I use daily. I wait
one or two bug fix releases until I see the issues are small enough they
won't affect my daily work. : )
