Hi. I have an IMac running Yosemite. For the sake of this post, I'll say my computer is named "Computer." A few weeks ago, I noticed that my Mac changed its name by adding a 2 in parentheses: "Computer (2)" I went into the Sharing preferences and removed the "(2)" so its name was back to "Computer." I did that a few weeks ago. I just looked in the Finder again and noticed the "(2)" has been added again. Does anyone know why the "(2)" keeps being added? Thanks. Sky

This has been widely reported I had (2), (5), and (10). In my case it went away when I re-started the AirPort base station. In my case it > went away when I re-started the AirPort base station. YMMV! I had a situation with Email Backup Pro software that never seemed to work correctly. It would start it's run, do some sort of system call to get the machine's name (more than just hostname on MacOS I think), and ultimately the backup was named after my Airport Express box instead of my Mac. And my Mac's name got renamed also. I'm running 10.8.5 and the developer is one of those endless pits of non-support that I'll remember. Not surprised when they stopped supporting the program entirely. Ultimately, the renaming problem when away when I used scutil to rename my machine instead of the Sharing preference. http://blog.psyrendust.com/2008/05/23/change-the-hostname-in-mac-os-x-osx / http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/66611/how-to-change-computer-nam e-so-terminal-displays-it-in-mac-os-x-mountain-lion -- DeeDee, don't press that button! It is not cured by rebooting Airport router (@Davoud), nor updating beyond 10.10.1 (@nospam) (tried both multiple times). It is documented as an issue elsewhere (e.g. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1804719), and those other threads seem consistently to point to problems with how airport handles multiple network bands or to issues with the bonjour sleep proxy in the Apple TV interfering with the one in Airport Routers (http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201960). Either way - what seems to happen is you end up with two different 'memories' of your machine's name in different parts of the same network, and OS X responds to the apparent conflict by triggering a rename of your machine (as it would if you logged into a network that already had a different machine with the name your machine uses). Two solutions are offered by the other threads - one is to disable "wake on demand" on your machine (the part of your machine that interacts with the sleep proxy servers). This might have a negative effect on how your machine works while in sleep mode, but nothing dramatic. The second is to change the name of your network location to match the name of your machine - no idea why this second one works, but seems to. I've been using the second fix (the location name one) and seems to be OK so far. HTH

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'm running 10.10.1 and I'm still having the problems. Hopefully Apple will fix it in the near future.

Hopefully Apple will fix it in the near future. I had this problem on only one of my computers running Yosemite. I fixed it by adding "--no-namechange" to the "ProgramArguments" dictionary of the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist property list, setting the name to the correct name in System Preferences > Sharing (and clicking Edit there to ensure the name was correct there too), and finally rebooting my router and the computer. I've read reports that Apple has this fixed in the latest update, but haven't bothered to remove the switch from the property list yet. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I hadn't noticed this until AFTER upgrading to 10.10.2. Thank you for this information. I'll try it out ASAP.

Okay, so one time? In band camp? Skylamar <Nothingtoseehere@nothing.com> was all, like: > Thanks everyone for the responses. I'm running 10.10.1 and I'm still > having the problems. Hopefully Apple will fix it in the near future. It is not an Apple problem, it is a problem with your router. -- Footnote on the High Energy Magic building: It was here that the thaum, hitherto believed to be the smallest possible particle of magic, was successfully demonstrated to be made up of resons (lit: 'Thing-ies) or reality fragments. Currently research indicates that each reson is itself made up of a combination of at least five 'flavours', known as 'up', 'down', 'sideways', 'sex appeal' and 'peppermint'.

The router loses the connection to the machine, the machine reconnects, but the router is still holding the other IP and showing it as connected, so OS X says "Oh, there's already a machine connected, I better add (2)" and this repeats.
