you *clearly* didn't read the link.

if you're going to dismiss a poll of many people as being invalid as
well as a lengthy article describing various problems, then i'm going
to dismiss your tiny sample as invalid (which it most certainly is,
regardless).

One possibility would be that people who have a problem are more apt to
respond to such a pole than people who don't.

It isn't even that. This is specifically a poll of people who are
having problems with Mail in Mavericks

The question being asked is "Did the Mavericks Mail update fix your
Gmail woes?"

To extrapolate from that poll (as nospam does) that 85% of people have
problems with Mavericks and Gmail is either stupid or deceptive.

He paints with a huge brush.

Or just the usual mis-reporting of all statistical polls.

I use GMail with Apple Mail as well without issue. I have friends who do
the same and just asked two of them if they've had problems with Mail
and GMail. Neither did. Go figure.

it was more of a generic comment as to why someone would want to test
drive something before installing it.

with every release of any software, new features are added and existing
features may be changed or removed. sometimes those changes are good
and sometimes they're not.

being able to find out before committing to an upgrade is often very
helpful, especially with an operating system, where backtracking is a
major pain in the ass.

most of the time, speed isn't going to affect that evaluation.

searching in apple mail was never particularly fast.

> What sort of Apple Mail bugs have you been seeing?

apple mail with gmail is still screwed up. they released a quick fix
which helped but it's still broken.

if someone uses gmail a lot, they will find that mavericks will not be
a pleasant experience unless they use a different mail app than apple
mail. apparently nobody at apple uses gmail.

Again, not my experience. I'm not seeing that Apple Mail with gmail
is "broken," but I may not be using the features of gmail (or Apple
Mail) that are at issue.

Since for some reason you resist specifying what those features are,
it is hard to tell. It certainly isn't as simple as "anyone who uses
gmail with Apple Mail will tell you it is broken," because I do, and I
wouldn't tell anyone that.

Same here. Apple mail works fine with 2 gmail accounts, one IMAP, one
POP, with no problems whatsoever. Multiple labels/folders, lots of
rules.

apparently not.

less than 15% of respondents do *not* have a problem with apple mail
and gmail. the remaining 85% or so do, from minor to serious, or they
gave up entirely:

see above. most people *will* tell you it doesn't work properly. you
are fortunate to not have encountered any problems, or you didn't
notice it if you did.

even if you limit it to 'broken' rather than 'somewhat', it's still
rather high.

I think you are telling me that of the people who were already having
problems with gmail on Mavericks, the ones who were motivated to
answer that survey are mostly those who are still having problems
after the update.

Not very meaningful.

The above obviously tells us _nothing_ about "most people." At best,
it would tell us only about those people who are having trouble with
Mavericks + gmail and not the ones who have no trouble.

On what do you base the notion that I'm fortunate in this respect?

As far as I can tell, everyone I know using Mavericks is also using
Gmail on it, with no problem.

You've now posted about these problems like 8 times without identifying
any of them. They can't be that subtle to identify.

then they aren't doing much with gmail or not noticing it.

There are many other things to test in between working and working
well, and many are varying degrees of objective and subjective. OS's
differ from each other in features and not all of these features are
about speed.

definitely. a flash drive is just another usb drive, just smaller and
slower, particularly for booting.

there are large areas with slow access, but there aren't a whole lot of
people in those areas *and* who want to download large files.

it ain't just apple. microsoft distributes windows electronically. ios
and android are done that way too.

electronic distribution is the future. boxed cd/dvds are the past.
