Sad, but true. Alas, I've been having a crisis of faith brought on by the latest hardware revisions and the insanity of Lion. It was triggered by the realization that two of my machines can't go to ML. (Three are on SL, my 2011 Mini came infested with Lion. I worry that support for SL will be dropped soon and I'll have two machines that are forced to Lion, if I can find a copy to buy. My MBP & the Mini will probably go to ML.) I've really been put off by what I perceive as an insane file saving paradigm which came into play with Lion. A system whose apps don't respect the sanctity of original documents is something I do not wish to have anything to do with. I suppose I could run all non-Apple apps on the machine, even replacing TextEdit and Preview, but then why bother with OS X? Oh yeah, the great hardware! But then comes the latest round of hardware and the oh so sleek MBP with Retina display. Yeah, they haven't gotten around to killing the previous form factor, but I fear for functionality: expandable RAM, the ability to install a huge disk drive and Ethernet! (I'm still partial to Firewire and optical disks too, but willing to let go as far as built in.) My wife has said I can get a new MBP before they refresh desired hardware away, but a new machine would come with ML. (See previous paragraph.) The whole cloud thing bothers me too. Sorry, I want the Internet as a resource, not something to be utterly dependent upon. While I think he was really stupid with respect to not being backed up, I see the case of the guy who had his iPod, iPad & MBP wiped remotely via iCloud as a harbinger of things to come. I see some really ugly cases of widespread privacy violations and identity theft as well as loss and outright destruction of data on a wide scale becoming more common. I prefer to keep all that at arms length, using it very selectively, if at all. (Adjusts tinfoil hat...) Then there's the whole issue of the iOS walled garden. The siren song of Android freedom beckons, where one can have apps that aren't excluded from iOS because they violate Apple's rules as far as esthetics, or otherwise competing with Apple solutions. (And the Mac Apps Store/Gatekeeper are making my spidey-sense tingle...) Once the chain of Apple is broken anywhere, because of any of the above reasons, then interoperability suffers because of the proprietary integration between products. Apple does not play well with others... I really do think the SL and the pre-Retina MBP represented a high point from which Apple seems to be falling, driven by the dumbed down IOS model, love of the cloud and their relentless, bleeding-edge minimalism. All these feelings (and more) are making it hard to figure out what to do next in terms of my next phone or computer. With Apple, there is an increasing feel of a treadmill, where I'm being compelled to update to things I don't want. - Rich

Alas, I've been having a crisis of faith brought on by the > latest hardware revisions and the insanity of Lion. Nothing sad about it. If Mac OS doesn't work for you, you don't rant or lament, you switch to an OS that works for you. What's the problem? But Linux? No high-end anything except servers and some scientific software (the latter being as easy or easier to run on the Mac). Goodbye Creative Suite, Aperture, Final Cut Pro... With an overall market share of 1.2% and a desktop market penetration of effectively 0%, that is not going to change. I would go for Windows over that any day. As for the insanity of Lion, for some people Lion and ML perform very well. Many independent writers--meaning not hired by or otherwise beholden to Apple--agree that they are the best desktop OS's ever. My apologies for that. The fact is that I use my applications under ML the same way I have used them for years. They may load a little faster under ML, sometimes save large files a bit faster, but otherwise there is no discernible difference. > I've really been put off by what I perceive as an insane file saving > paradigm which came into play with Lion... If TextEdit serves your word processing needs and Preview is your graphics app, you definitely don't need a Mac. I take back what I said about Linux. It would be perfect for you. > The whole cloud thing bothers me too. Sorry, I want the Internet as a > resource, not something to be utterly dependent upon. The Internet. He was attacked over the Internet. The "cloud" is just a hyped-up name for the same remote servers many people have been using for years--though greater ease of use and integration may justify a new name. The cloud is not just an Apple thing, it's an industry-wide fad. Two things may happen to fads--they may go away, or they may mature and become mainstream. I expect the latter will happen with so-called cloud computing. And where does it say you have to participate, anyway? I use encrypted external drives for backup. All of my media libraries are on my own servers, one of which is a sort of home-brew cloud in that it is in the home of a trusted friend for physical security reasons. HD's are cheap, easy, and reliable, and they're not going to go away soon. The only things I put in the semi-public cloud are large files that I need to share with others and that I place in my DropBox. Very handy. The files are too large to e-mail and recipients can retrieve them at their convenience. For some publishers DropBox is now the preferred way to receive large, hi-res TIFFs. No need to worry about that in Linux, though, because you wouldn't be dealing with 16-bit hi-res TIFFs due to lack of software to create and edit them. > Then there's the whole issue of the iOS walled garden. (And the Mac Apps Store/Gatekeeper are > making my spidey-sense tingle...) I'll take the walled garden, with its aesthetics and the best integration and reliability in the industry, any day. Cheap knockoffs just aren't my thing. But if you want an Android, you don't need to justify yourself to anyone. > Once the chain of Apple is broken anywhere, because of any of the above > reasons, then interoperability suffers because of the proprietary > integration between products. Apple does not play well with others... What others? I exchange text and graphics files and video and spreadsheets with my own Windows software and with outside collaborators who do not use the Mac. No problems. As for integration within the Apple family, Mac OS with iOS, it is the envy of the tech industry, and for good reason. > All these feelings (and more) are making it hard to figure out what to do > next in terms of my next phone or computer. With Apple, there is an > increasing feel of a treadmill, where I'm being compelled to update to > things I don't want. Having said that, you still find it hard to figure out what to do? The Mac isn't for everyone. It's only a computer, and if it's not the right one for you, just move on. You don't owe Apple any loyalty, particularly if you feel that they have abandoned you. I'm not big on brand loyalty, anyway--that smacks of dogma, which I abjure--and if a certain brand doesn't serve my needs I move on to something else with no apologies to anyone. Bottom line--I've been called a fanboi, as many of us have. I deny it. I use Macs because they work for me for what I do. I try to avoid juvenile remarks like "Macs rule" and I don't believe that everyone should use the Mac OS because I use it. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

I've been asked by two people if they should get a Mac and my reply is,
"Yes, absolutely. Hang on. Tell me what apps you need?"
Then they list their apps and how they use them. And I tell them that
they would find the transition painful as a particular app does not
exist for Mac so he'd have convert and adopt a new app for that program
(in both cases they each used an accounting program that does not have a
corresponding Mac version). And probably install Windows under Fusion
or such. So, it just isn't worth it.
I'll confess to being a fanboi where Macs are concerned, but some fans
are fickle are recognize that the bench doesn't have complete depth at
all positions.

Hang on. Tell me what apps you need?" I do something similar, except that instead of asking "what apps", I ask "what sorts of things do you use it for"? Often, there's a Mac app that does a better job of whatever-it-is, and changing apps at the same time as changing the hardware and OS is probably the best time. Isaac

While I personally disagree with many of the things Apple did to OS-X starting with LION (I need a computer, not an appliance) I am staying tuned to see what happens with that Windows-8 thing that is expected between now and Christmas. If people are seriously turned off by the migration from Windows-XP to Windows 8, this may be very good news for Apple, despite what they did with Lion and Mountain Lion. While my server will remain Snow Leopard until I move it to Linux, my desktop/laptops may eventually have to move to whatever is current for OS-X. Hopefully by then, Apple will have removed or allow one to disable stuff like that autosave and other annouyances such as gratuitous transparency etc. But am not holding my breath. I realise that my needs are different from the mass market and AAPL is airming at mass market. So the fact that I disagree with the direction taken doesn't mean that I don't have confidence that AAPL will succeed.

Which computer needs are no longer being met by Lion? I also need a computer - I'm not primarily a programmer, but I need emacs, perl, shell scripting, TeX/LaTeX, cron jobs (or the equivalent), Xwindows (very rarely now, but still not never), ssh, sshd, the ability to serve web pages. [I also need MS Excel and Word, iTunes, a browser and various other things.] All these needs are met by Lion at least as well as previous big cats. [It is also true that Lion has features I don't use, but that doesn't seem like a problem to me.] > Windows 8, Whatever MS does with Windows 8, and I hope it is good, it is not going to end up being as compatible with unix as an operating system which is a GUI on top of unix. So it wond' appeal to me.

Apparently, auto-save and Versions cause people's heads to explode. I've said many times that it's still got some ways to go to be great. It's still early, and I guess I'd call it a beta feature, rather than a finished product. But it's not like it causes me any difficulty, data loss, or other problems. I can still do exactly what I've always done. Apple could have done a better job of either allowing us to turn it off and get back our old "Save As" menu item - not making it optional was, in my opinion, a mistake. But folks acting like Versions and AutoSave are a dealbreaker on Lion are just blowing it way out of proportion. Oh, and the fact that ~/Library is now hidden by default. Oh, no! Otherwise, there's little about Lion that's intrusive or cause people to have to change any work habits (not counting the loss of Rosetta - which has been a major issue for some people, though the blame for that falls much harder on the software companies who never updated their software than on Apple, IMHO.) There's been a lot of hand-wringing about how horrible Lion is, but very very little substance. Witness the nearly endless discussion recently about the width of the scrollbars. *That* is cause for such complaint? Seriously? (Though, in fairness, I do agree that some of the defaults are not to my taste - for example, I like my scrollbars visible all the time. So I flipped the setting. Not a big deal.)

First off, my apologies for starting a thread and then getting so tied up that I could not stick with it. I'll try to catch up. Thanks, Michelle for the link to <http://tidbits.com/article/13187> - that was a good read. Thanks Davoud for your initial comments. Davoud wrote: > > One program, TextEdit. It's a Swiss Army knife, which I make quite a bit of use of, but more often than not, as a *viewer*. One of my most common sins is typing into the wrong window when working in many windows. With Auto Save, this immediately corrupts the original file. In Lion, I can close the window with no warning given at all. ML ameliorates this somewhat, if I understand it, by allowing a rollback when one closes the window. But until the time the file is recovered, it is WRONG. Not good if it is a running script or some other form of shared document that others might access in the meantime. It is this disregard for the sanctity of originals which I have a huge problem with. Yes, save versions of explicitly saved/saved as/duplicated/whatever files. Auto save to a DRAFT file!! Most of the other stuff can be lived with, pref'd off or ignored. As you point out, there is considerable eye-candy, pretty shiny stuff like Mission Control/Launchpad which can simply be ignored. > I defy anyone to tell me how Photoshop and Aperture and Illustrator and > Mail and MSExcel and Safari and Thoth and iTunes are any different in > Lion or ML than under Snow Leopard or previous. I do indeed run a lot of non-Apple stuff, SeaMonkey for browsing & e-mail, Open Office when I'm forced to mess with pretty stuff, etc. A change to a different OS would not be terribly traumatic in that sense. > I'll say it again, peeps: you don't owe Apple anything. This thread is sort of a rant, me taking an opportunity to express sadness that Apple seems to be making the OS X world be dummy-friendly. I understand the motive, $$market$$. I'm just sad about it because I *really* do think my MBP(5,5) is the best computer I've ever owned. All other laptops look & feel like cheap junk compared to a unibody. SL is IMHO the best OS, because it wasn't dummified. Maybe there needs to be one more pref in OS X, to set User Level. Cheers! Rich

This is a complete and utter misstatement of facts. The original unedited file is not lost, discarded, overwritten, nor destroyed. > In Lion, I can > close the window with no warning given at all. I would offer that the odds of opening a script in Lion that was not 'locked' and accidentally making a change that was saved without your knowledge is a pretty slim chance, all in all. This would be a good reason to have keep the file locking in 10.8. I'm not sure how this works in 10.8, but I know that in Script Editor, it does "the right thing". > It is this disregard for the sanctity of originals which I have a huge > problem with. Yes, save versions of explicitly saved/saved > as/duplicated/whatever files. Auto save to a DRAFT file!! I do prefer how vim manages recovery files, but that would be a terrible interface for your average user. The way autosave works in 10.7 and 10.8 is the way that it should work because that is what is best for the non-geek users (most everyone). Us geeks have to be aware of things like this and maybe take a couple of steps to prevent these issues. For myself, I can honestly say that I have never edited a script in TextEdit and that the possibility of doing so has never occurred to me. > This thread is sort of a rant, me taking an opportunity to express sadness > that Apple seems to be making the OS X world be dummy-friendly. I think this is the attitude that annoys me. If it's not a problem for you, it's not valid. Others have different requirements. I've heard a lot of amorphous whining about autosave, but your comment is the first time I ever hear an example where autosave would *actually* cause a problem. >> I prefer 10.8 to 10.6, but I prefer 10.6 to 10.7. > Interesting.
