Linda Burnett, 26, a resident of San Diego, was visiting her in-laws and, while there, went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries. Later, her husband noticed her sitting in her car in the driveway with the windows rolled up and her eyes closed, with both hands behind the back of her head. He became concerned and walked over to the car. He noticed that Linda's eyes were now open and she looked very strange. He asked her if she was okay, and Linda replied that she had been shot in the back of the head and had been holding her brains in for over an hour. The husband called the paramedics, who broke into the car because the doors were locked and Linda refused to remove her hands from her head. When they finally got in, they found that Linda had a wad of bread dough on the back of her head. A Pillsbury biscuit canister had exploded from the heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the wad of dough hit her in the back of her head. When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered. Linda is a blonde, a Democrat, and an Obama supporter, but that could all be a coincidence. The defective biscuit canister was analyzed and the expiration date was from 2008, so it was determined to be Bush's fault.

Ummm, when barricades are put up around War Memorials and WWII Vets are kept from visiting and military chaplains can face arrest for doing their job, I would not say that it would be Ted Cruz's fault. The Government has shut down 17 times in the past 30 years, and NEVER have Veterans been locked out or threatened for doing their jobs. In addition, the Biz Zero has ordered all NFL and MLB playoff games to be blacked out for deployed soldiers, while he made sure that HIS military golf course would remain open. And YOU are proud of this man, being a Veteran yourself?!? If THAT is "living in the past", then DAMN RIGHT, I am proud of it!!!

The > Government has shut down 17 times in the past 30 years, and NEVER have > Veterans been locked out or threatened for doing their jobs. True, the government shutdown is not directly Ted Cruz's fault; it is the fault of the Tea Party Republicans who are so afraid of the ACA working that they are willing to hold the government hostage in their attempts to defund the ACA. They've tried and failed more than 40 times to repeal the ACA, so now they're trying to defund it by, as I said, holding the government hostage. Military chaplains are not facing arrest for doing their jobs. Thanks to the Tea Party Republicans in the House, there is no funding to keep the war memorials open; thats the reason the memorials are closed. And it's not that this is the first time they've been closed; it is the first time, though, that a bunch of right-wingers have made an issue of it for political/ideological reasons. > In addition, the Biz Zero has ordered all NFL and MLB playoff games to > be blacked out for deployed soldiers, Actually, the entire network has shut down because there is no money to pay for it. You can thank the Tea Party Republicans for that too. > while he made sure that HIS military golf course would remain open. Golf courses on military reservations are operated from Non-Appropriated Funds (i.e., funds that do not come from the federal treasury); therefore, they are not affected by the shutdown. From a New Zealander's point of view, I have to say I side with the Democrats on this matter (I know, what a shock - a member of a liberal secular country agrees with US Democrats). Democrats won the vote in Congress on the ACA. They won the vote in the Senate. The ACA was then contested in the Supreme court where the key provisions were validated (unfortunately states were given the ability to sabotage it by allowing them to opt out of Medicaid expansion - the whole states thing still seems odd to me as a NZer), and then with the ACA being the key point of contention in the presidential race - Obama won re-election, further validating the ACA. Now the Republicans, or really more the fanatical Tea Party, have tried everything they can to sabotage a law that by any reasonable person's judgement was created and validated democratically, and repeatedly so. The shocking part for me is how these politicians seem to have lost sight of the fact that they work first and foremost for their country, and thus all of it's citizens. Not just their electorate. Not just their party. But their loyalty should first and foremost be to country and all it's citizens. Instead they act as if only their beliefs are right, and everyone else isn't entitled to live differently. There's no respect for people who don't want to think or do the same things. They've lost sight of a central pillar of democracy - that one must not only tolerate difference, but respect it. Or you risk becoming a dictatorship in all but name. See what happens when the winning party thinks their majority constitutes the right to rule like despots in countries like Iran, and Turkey (one a true success story of secular democracy in the Middle East, now a frightening place to live if you value free speech). Or Russia where one party, and really one person has taken over through a cult of personality, and ruthlessly quashes opposition in the belief only they can lead Russia back to glory. This is why only open, secular government that enforces free speech, and respects everyone, can be truly free for all. Once a group starts imposing only their beliefs it destroys free speech and freedom for the rest. The religious fanatics in the US treat secularism as some kind of enemy, and try to re-write history to say it was never the intention of the US founders. But the founders of the US just as those of modern UK and NZ government knew that secularism is in fact the friend of the religious, non-religious, whatever a person's beliefs. Because only with respect for all and free speech enshrined in government, can everyone live happily with one another. People like poor George Kerby are so blinded by their own beliefs, that they cannot accept the rest of the country, if not the world have a right to be respected too. George feels that when a religious nutter who thinks he's doing his god's will is in power like George Bush, who did reprehensible things like make aid faith tested, or the Tea Party fanatics (who attack a women's right to choose, amongst other reprehensible notions that violate international notions of human rights) score a win that he's winning and we should all somehow understand that we're wrong and he and they are right. George refuses to examine the downsides to blind belief. And when someone fair and square passes a law, or by god - a black liberal man gets elected, well George foams at the mouth, because when his party was in power, well it was the natural order of things, but if another segment of the country makes their voice heard and gets elected and makes laws - well, it's an abomination. It's all wrong. It was all right as rain when his party was in power. But it's just wrong, wrong, wrong and somehow a trick, a con, it just shouldn't be when another party is in power by swaying the public with their positions. It is hypocrisy of the first order. I'll ask again - what the hell ever happened to liberal republicans? For that matter what simply happened to republican meaning you believed is fiscal conservatism and small government? When did it become some kind of holy war against everyone else, with the arrogant belief that only they are right, and everyone else is the enemy? I'd just like to note that I know plenty of religious and /or conservative people whom I respect. Why? Because they live their lives their way and don't try to control mine. There's nothing wrong with religion when you can respect others. But the fanatics can't and won't see that respect for all is essential and you cannot have a free society by forcing others to live as your religious beliefs would dictate. Funny how it all comes down to religion once again. But that's what is at the core of the Tea Party and the religious right's takeover of the republican party - a religious zealotry that only they are right and they have some kind of right to enforce their beliefs on other, and that any tactics go when they use them, because it's all validated by their beliefs being the one true righteousness. The sheer hypocrisy in the Tea Party trying to claim the ACA wasn't legitimately passed and repeatedly democratically validated is simply outrageous. And their failure to buck up and do their jobs now it has, would be laughable, were it not such an affront to democracy and the country and ALL it's citizens coming first, before party. In NZ we would never stand for politicians not doing their jobs and respecting the will of the country, once a law has been passed and repeatedly validated by democratic processes. Compromise is not holding someone hostage till you get your way. The tea party republicans have had their way time and again in committee with provisions of the ACA, yet not a single one ever voted for it at any step, despite their being accommodated! I'll say it again: COMPROMISE IS NOT HOLDING SOMEONE HOSTAGE TILL YOU GET YOUR WAY. I sincerely hope Obama and the Democrats stand firm against this blatant attempt to hold the country hostage, and that the American people remember who is responsible. As an outsider who loves parts of America and some Americans, it is frightening to see zealotry attack the US'es secular government like this, and all the other attacks on it over the past years. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
